Hey Guy's, my 08 FE450 now has 9.9 hrs on it. I was out on Sunday for a trail ride, after the first woods section we came out to a fast road section...got on the gas hard and once in 3rd the bike would not upshift into 4th, no clutch/or clutched it did not matter...had to jam the shifter back into 2nd and then it upshifted normally. Did the same thing several times during the ride, and only seems to be when going up to 4th. Bike dont make any unussual sounds, just jams up then shift fine once you down shift then go back up.

I have changed the oil every 2-3 hours and changed it again today...no filings or metal particles, just the ussual light metallic swirls in the oil ( very minimal at that too )

i'd take the sidecover and clutch assembly off to have a look as it sounds like the gear selector control screw (acts like a bollard) in the middle has come loose.

regards

Taffy

Thanks Taffy

Is this something I should address ASAP or can I ride this weekend and then pop it apart. First Hare Scramble of the season is Sunday and I dont have enough spare time to get into tearing it apart before the race. Its a tight woods event and I doubt I'll see 4th gear, at least not in anger with the throttle pinned.

it's an easy job and if it is the screw coming loose you would be foolish to leave it the way it is

I see that you have you Berg for sale, link interested to know if you solved your shifting problem and if you did what was the cause?

Ed...

After changing the oil I adjusted the shifter hight and all is good, think it was just me as Jeff rode it and had zero problems before that. Sorry guy's but this Berg thing aint for me, I'm headed back to a Jap bike I'm afraid...I just havent got on with this thing from day 1. Nothin wrong with the bike, just not for me.

Maybe its a boot issue. I just changed my hole deal. New SiDi boots and now I'm shifting that thing all over the place. Getting it to 4th - 5th gear wear the old bike would be in 3rd.

nice to hear some no-nonsence frank and honest answers from someone. you are to be congratulated for that.

how many times do we get requests for info here and no back up post explaining how they found the answer!

Taffy

I think this is the problem, if you do not let the lever return all the way back down( it is sitting on top of your boot) it will not change up next up shift.
I can`t get the lever in the right position on the spline its ever to high or to low.
I have gotten used to it now though.
After the Husaberg I can`t see a jap bike that I would consider.

Size 12 boot so its a definet possibility for the shifting issue, seems much better now that I moved the shifter up. I think I may start messin with the sag #'s and fork height as well as play with the clickers a bit to get it to work for me, I'm a slow guy but this bike just seems odd to me...everything from bars too low, pegs to high, tank is wide etc, just dont feel comfortable at all on it and cant get into a rythm. No confidence in it...plus I'm not totally comfortable with the power of a 450...damn newbies eh'

your right the bike is different, the frame geometry and weight transfer are miles apart from a jap bike with a link

it makes the shock and forks work very hard, harder than any KTM, and the stock 08 valving on both ends doesn't work well together.

the frame is top heavy so to make the bike turn easier the front wheel is very close to the COG. that makes it hard to stand up.... less room. move the steering head 50mm forward and its a similar setup to a jap bike but with a high COG and a PDS rear and not just any PDS rear but an extreemely non progressive one. the shape of the frame and the tank makes it very hard to grip the bike with your legs too.

so long story short it can be made to handle very well with a few valving changes bar raisers and move the pegs back and some may enjoy that setup more than a jap bike but bottom line is its never going to feel like a jap bike with that old chassis.

I love the 650 motor though :D

perhaps something to consider with the box is that 3rd and 4th are the weak links for side loads, the others are bullet proof.

Ya nailed it Bushie...I almost traded it for a KIA today LOL. I have such a dislike for it that I cant even get excited about riding :(

I found today that if I stay more on mt toes and realy move feet I can find that bike grap with my legs and go through those gears.

ah I forgot lots of guys cut 12-15mm or so off the gear lever end. i did too its not a bad idea

if you get it revalved it will be well worth it, the stock hydraulic setup really does suck donkeys bits.
