I've got a 98 FC501. It won't start after running for 20 minutes and I thought it was the magneto, valves or other things. But it does start after sitting for a couple days (4-6 kicks). . It appears the plug is oily and wet and black. The carb settings are probably not well tuned and the plug is possibly too cold and not burning off the junk. That's why after 20 minutes when the plug gets yucky, it won't start.

If I pull the plug and clean it (or replace it), it starts right away. Anyone know how to adjust the carb to make it run so it doesn't foul the plug? Does this mean making it run leaner? I'm also thinking of switching to the next hotter plug to compensate. Also, the fact that it's getting black, does that mean my rings are not keeping the oil down south???
Any comments???

How does it run when it does run? Does it smoke when it runs? Black smoke or blue smoke? Have you downloaded the hard start guide and read it? It is in the download section under Resources.

fitz, your problem could be from a dirty air filter or carb. I have to ask the same question as berger did. Once you answer them then we can help. If you clean your carb write the jet sizes down also what type of carb it is. It does sound like its running rich but we need more information first.

gas/oil on plug

Hi, fitz....
I have a '98 fc501, starts easily as long as carb is clean, even with old plug. Check this thread for my carb set-up starting problems. I am at sea level. You may have to modify carb settings for altitude. Also, if your plug is oiled, have you removed the crankcase breather vent tube from the bottom of the frame to prevent crankcase from venting into airbox? Do you have a lot of hours on the motor, and are valve seals, rings still doing their job? Possibly time for top end overhaul?

Oily plug

Gents,

Thanks for all the comments. The motor was fully overhauled professionally about 30 hours ago. However, I admit the carb is probably dirty and I don't know the jet sizes. I'll pull out the carb and clean it. The bike runs awesome when its running. What procedure do you guys use for cleaning the carb? Any carb I've ever removed "looks" clean, but I spray carb cleaner in the airbox when it's running. I suppose that's not the proper way....

What you need to do is pull the carb and take it apart for cleaning. I use a can or 2 of spray carb. cleaner. Find a clean, well lit place to do this, take your time. While its apart write the jet sizes down. There are downloads with information on how to do this. Keep us updated and I hope this helps.
