Well I am definatley at the right place to ask.
Someone please tell me about the FX470e 2002.
I ride a TM 250E now and really like it but would like to add a Husaberg?
The bike I am looking at is really clean andseams to to have been taken care of. Some insight on the bike would be great I think updates have been done but what if they haven't?

where you from? i'm guessing the UK?

go for it. good bike. they always need a tickle here or there but at 4.5 years old you can't expect UHE top come upo with a definitive answer. take your chances. just ask him about all the stuff in or 'red danger' section of the owners doc.

regards

Taffy

All of this info and more has been previously written about and can be found in a search using the word update or updates and of course the "Doc" has it all in there too.

The motor is probably my favorite but I have not ridden a 501 which most feel is the optimum size. The 470 has a strong hit off the bottom due to the cam.

Things that need attention at service intervals:

Update rockerarm assemblies to 03 version (a must)
Update cam sprocket to steel from aluminum, 03 version (it may have the steel one)
Use updated cam chain (see doc) (BOSS puts the 05 cam& DID chain in)
Cam chain tensioner is too short (see doc) (many choices available)
Update counterbalancer to double row if it has single (see the doc as there are two different versions. Know which one you need)
E-start is marginal (use a fresh autodecompression device and YTZ7S battery) Crossing you fingers and prayer also helps.

If the bike has 100 hours the above must be done along with cam bearing replacement.

Most important!!!!!
Change your oil frequently (after every ride if you can) as the cam chain tends to saw through the cylinder and create aluminum shavings that contaminate the oil. Using the updated cam chain tensioner and guides (04-05) should help as the oil will then suffer much less aluminum contamination.

Notwithstanding the above, the 470 motor is very sweet. The SEM ignition is only good for about 3 years and will cost about $400 to replace.

Thanks for the quick response.
No I don't live in the U.K. I live in Northern California.
I learned of TM through kart racing GREAT BIKES too. Sounds like the Husaberg would be a good addition. I know they no londer make the 470 so is the motor completely different I want to make sure I can get parts?

95%of all parts are common to all displacement sizes. The 01-05 motors are essentially the same except for updates. I like my 01 470 motor better than my 05 450 for wide open desert 8O The suspension is a bit harsh though compared to an 05 but not too bad :)

Thanks for the info, I have heard all kinds about the motors good and bad how has your held up? This will be a second bike for I am not yet thinking of getting rid of my TM.

Hi BMXRDAD, I also have an 02 FX470, not an"E" any more. I have done all the updates that are discussed here. BOSS did an 05 cam and chain in my engine, and it has worked quite well. When I bought the bike and shortly there after discovered this web site(a blessing and a curse :D ), I was really getting worried, BOSS is telling me not to worry there great bikes, then I would read about some of the issues that the 01-02 engines were having and get all worried again. In the end, after doing the proper upgrades to the engine, I love the bike, and do not regret buying it one bit. Now this bike you are looking at, if it does not have any of the engine upgrades, should be an inexpensive purchase.

The only problems I have experienced are the stator went out at 3 years and the cylinder base gasket started leaking. Thats it. I have four bikes plus my wifes quad so its hard to rack up a lot of hours on any one bike. The one constant is frequent oil changes and not reving it too high. I keep the revs down on the 470 and usually ride a gear higher than normal. The 470 can be lugged easily as it produces very good torque. I think you will like it as it is a very unique motorcycle.

BMXRDAD,

As already mentioned, check to see if the updates that have been mentioned by Husabutt, Bendberg, and Taff were done to the bike already or not. If they have done the rocker arm and bearing upgrade and the cam chain and tensioner upgrade the bike should prove a good, reliable bike. The double row counter balancer would be a plus but should not be sweated as the bigger bikes, 550 & 650, had more of a problem with this. Also as already mentioned, these bikes only have a quart of oil in them so keeping good, fresh oil is essential! You mentioned that the bike looked like it was well taken care of, check the tires to see if they are still the original Michelin starcross, this will give you an idea of how much the bike has been ridden. Many times you can still find a bike with the original tires still on it. Good luck and keep us posted with your search.

Regards,

Please define "cylinder based gasket" regarding the integral cylinder casting and sleeve design of the post 2000 engines.

Sleeve O Rings perhaps? Head Gasket maybe?

Thank's

 I did in fact mean the head gasket.
Additionally be sure to use the updated "cylinder head gasket" which has a bead of blue silicone type material on it. A thicker gasket is also available to help lower compression a tad bit I suppose.

Indeed I am a jerk. Albeit consitant and often correct. :)

No offense taken whatsoever!

As a hobbiest and enthusiast my main purpose here is to learn as much as possible. The more you know about the bikes the more you enjoy them. I certainly appreciate all the advice you have given and look forward to your thoughts on present and future topics.

WOW! a flash from my past!!!!

I am new to this site and Dale Lineweaver's name jumped out.
Way long ago I would bracket race my street bike at SEARS POINT and this guy would win on this auto husky super consistant and a pain in the side of all who had to go against him (Dale Lineweaver)

I always heard he was the go-too guy and this site confirms it.

Indeed that was I.

Thank you for shaking loose some very fond memories and for the kind words.

Sincerely,

Dale

That was the machine.

I had loads of fun making passes back then.
I also remember a car never met the driver a Nova Wagon not very fast, but could run the same time over and over.

I always would get wrapped up into going fast and would forget to play the bracket game.
