G'day guys,

Can the head be removed from the 450 70* bikes with the engine still in the frame?

I have a head gasket to replace.

Is the any issue with cam timing with enough head surfacing to bump up the compression a little?

I have a track day in two weeks. Normally if I had the time I'd do a full piston kit etc.

Thanks guys.

Head removed.

At this stage I'll just replace the head gasket and get the head surfaced.

Summer I'll get a bit more serious.

Does anyone know if the 570 piston has the same deck height as the 450? Is there enough meat in the cyl to take the 450 out to 100mm?

Thanks.

Al.

I'm going the top end kit.

The barrel is having 8 thou removed from the base for a compression ratio of 13:1.

It needs a hone for the new piston kit with no cross hatching evident.

I'll purchase a 570 camshaft when I can find one.

I'm quite sure there is enough material for a 570 piston in your 450 cyl. There are big bore kits for KTM 450 with a 102mm piston too. I'm planning to buy one for my ****** 570 cyl making it a 590.

As far as I know the only differences are diameter. Many KTM parts from the same year are interchangable so you have a few options.

With a 570 piston you will end up at 500cc and with a 102 you will get 520cc.

Thanks Jon for the reply.

At this stage I'm going to stick with the 450cc. The cyl measured good for a hone and a 'C' piston. 8 thou is being removed from the bottom of the barrel to give 13:1 with a stock piston.

I'll pull the head down for a clean up of the ports.

All while I wait for a piston to be found. I'm wanting a Wossner over the likes of a ProX. If one can't be located I'll have to go with the Vertex at an extra $60 FFS.

Jon, my reading found the 102mm kit improved some low end but did nothing much beyond that which doesn't work for my motard track work. Keep us informed on your progress with the 570. I'd like some more mid and high for my 570.

Al.

I would guess to get more mid and hi for a 570 one would need to straighten the exhaust and give it a bigger throttlebody. This assumption is just from reading about other peoples experience, I have no empirical data myself. But it makes sense.

The cylinder I have can't be honed so that's why I will go for 102mm, + I want more grunt while driving around for fun as I don't race. I do however plan to ice race in the winter so it's not optimal, but neither am I so it is what it is :)

This will be the last oversize in this bore. If there is a next time i will go the 102mm, or.....

As far as the Wossner pistons go, the 570 has a higher compression height by 1.7mm over the 450. That could be dealt with.

So in essence you could use a 570 piston and have the cyl bored to 100mm and use the 570 head gasket. (as you indicated above) Would be alot cheaper option than the 102 kit.

For the camshaft in the 450 I have located a cam 78036010233. From research it looks to be the first update of the 570/530EXC cam.

I have another cam I am purchasing. It's the first 570 cam. 81736010133

The first cam I have on the way being the 78036010233 is apparently an early 530EXC-R cam.

Some of these were known to give starting issues with a faulty decomp. I noticed that some have the decomp mechanism reversed. I may be able to correct this with the mechanism off the 450 if I decide to use this cam.

I don't know what the specs are of this cam or how different it may be to the 570 cam.

I have heard over some coffee that a 530 cam from some year with a 390/450 airbox should give a nice character to the 570 engine. Please compare the cams and give some more feedback and info when you know :)

Good coffee Jon? I just had a great coffee. Brazil monte alegre ;)

What intrigues me is the 390/450 snorkel is for more low down? Am I correct in thinking this?

I need to research the airboxes some more. Maybe a swap between the 450 and 570!

It would be nice to know the specs or even better graphs of these cams but I know that isn't going to happen. Would I be wrong in thinking the 530 cam is somewhere inbetween the 450 and 570 cams?

Al.

It's running well.

A couple of heat cycles and a 15 min run down the road.

Looking forward to the cams to arrive this week, then some track time on Monday 16th weather dependent.

Photobucket is kaput. How do I post pics? I tried Google photos but it doesn't show.

Thanks.

Geez this is a hard forum to post pics on. Trying to get pics down in size where they will be excepted. Oh well.

Another 30-40 mins this arvo giving the 450 a run around the dirt roads (in tard trim) and it's running healthier without any fluid loss. So far so good.

Would be nice if one of the cams turned up tomorrow (Fri) for Sundays ride day. Fingers crossed.

One 530 cam and a 570 cam. Don't know what the differences are in duration and lift from each other or the FX450 cam. If I get time and can find the room to run the dial indicator I'll try and get some numbers.

Imgur.com might be a good host. I'll look into useful and hopefully long-term-reliable image hosts for here. (Incidentally the phone Tapatalk app is in some respects clumsy to use, but I think its image uploading feature can help in situations like this.)

The dial indicator is a pain in the arse to set up with the engine in the bike, as is the degree wheel. I found I couldn't get a straight shot at the valve retainer and the flywheel is inboard of the bottom frame rail. I'm going to measure my valve hammer before I put the engine back in the bike.

Hey just got an email from photobucket asking for money or they'll cut off my 3rd party hosting. F-king extortion.
