Ok i have been looking and looking can not find what im looking for really. I want to know what kind of gearing I should be running on my 650 the bike came with 15/42 sprockets on a 5.10/18 tire I really dont need to be doing 150 MPH on the dirt I plan on mostly trail rides and some fire roads. The bike is plated but every bike ive had has been mostly 13/50 to 13/53 is there any reason people run such high rations on these bikes? I still have to find a front sprocket so I was wondering if I would be better of running a 15/53 since I have these parts already? My 2010 FE 450 is 13/52 I like the set up goes slow when i need it to but can still rip down the straights

15/48 is nice for the 650. I would not gear it lower since this motor has so much torque.

im now using 15/45 and like it

Regards

14/48 works good for trail work. 15/48 for dualsport.

Looking at the chain guide I dont think the 53 tooth sprocket will even fit looks like ill need to go pick up another one

went with a 15/51 rode just a little today doesnt seem to nasty on the street at all does good on the dirt didnt get a whole lot of both though need to change the oil now though so Ill try it out more later

I bought a new 51 rear sprocket fit without any tweaking seams to work pretty good still the bike doesn't seam like a mad power house on the street I can pull the front end up it I want but it doesn't really want to just throttle wheelie. The one bike I have ridden that did that was an 03 xr650r but that was long ago and IDK what kind of gearing it had

There must be somthing wrong then. my 650 dose throttle wheelie in 1st trough 4th. in 5th i have to pull on
the bars and snapp the throttle at the right time. 6th it is problematic but a good wheelie guy probably
can do it, I can't.

Hmmmm....... thats no good. I did also notice that sometimes when leave from a stop it will cough a little but not all the time. Its got some old and I havent gone through the carb at all yet. I did notice that the high low switch on the bike makes a huge difference. is it possible someone put a flywheel weight on it to mellow the bike out?

I have 15/48 on one of my 650's. It's great for most everything and a little dual sport also.
I had been using 15/47 on the other one for a little while but liked the 48 better. It's just too
tall for some trails and sixth is hard to even use most places I ride.
So I swapped the 15/47 to 14/47 today. It's a green sticker bike anyway and I think it's going to
be something I like more for trail riding.
And just so you know the 14/47 will work with a 116 link chain. It was close but there is still just a little adjustment at the back because the wheel is far back in the slider.
And if I end up running out of adjustment later I can try the 48 as berger suggested.

I have a ride report on the 650. This is the first day of test with the 14/47.
I like it. I have the 15/48 on the other bike to compare with.
First of all, I think I wouldn't want it any lower with this bike. With all the power and torque
the gearing can feel a little short initially when opening up on some fireroads. Not really a problem,
it's just that I'm used to the 15/48 that has a nice spread there.
Where this gearing really shines in in the single track and tight stuff. I found myself in 3rd there more often
and making some good time where with the taller gearing it's hard to stay in 3rd.
1st gear might not be used too much, but I found 6th gear on a few open spreads and felt good.
Overall I like it and will keep it for a while. If anything I would go back a tad taller instead of lower. But with
the 14/47 being at 3.36 gearing the big 650 still operates quite well.
The 15/48 may still be my favorite at 3.2 but it's my dual sport bike. If I was riding just single track for a day the
14/47 would be my choice.
I have a few more gearing ideas for this bike. One would be the 14/46 at 3.28 but would need to cut the 116
links down to 114. Other choice would be 15/50 at 3.33 which is close to the 14/47. Don't know if I could really feel it being taller. But I could defintely feel some difference in the single track between the 15/48 and the 15/47
and they are 3.2 and 3.13 respectively.

I like the 15/51 gearing seams like it has room in the gears for the on road stuff but can get down low enough for some single track. Once i got the timing adjusted the bike is much happier. Throttle wheelies no prob I got this bike for the soul purpose of Dualsposrt use any real trail rides ill just stick with my 2010 fe450

Yea,
That gearing would be somewhere in the middle of the 14/47 and 14/48.
I can definitely still feel 6th pulling pretty far with the 47.

Well, after the 2nd ride I have changed my mind. The 14/47 is too short for me :? I started to feel the negatives
with this gearing. It's not bad like I said for the tight single track but for the most part I have realized that I want to carry more speed and there's just not enough spread in between the gears for my liking. That and there seems to be too much engine breaking going on. Seemed to be wearing me out more with the engine breaking and going through the gears more.
I may try the 15/49 or just put the same 15/48 thats on the other one.
