I have an 06 450 in SM trim. Yesterday I noticed a strong smell of petrol after filling up when I stoped at the first set of lights. Ignored it to the second set when I noticed it was literaly chucking fuel down the street. Pulled over closed the tank on both side and that cured the problem. I assumed maybe the float was sticking in the carb. Now though it looks as though the left hand side fuel pipe is split. Is this possible? is it any thing any one has seen before. How easy is it to fix?

Cheers Mark

Hi, my new fe 550 sprung a leak on the left hand side uppermost rad cowel bolt for no apparent reason. i only noticed after filling up as this bolt is near the top of the tank, it looks like the bolt hole isnt bottomed out and allows the fuel to leak on a full tank, its in the hands of the warranty gods now!

I don't know if this will help or not, but on my FE-450, I blocked off my LH petcock with a plug, and only run my RH petcock. This makes tank removal very easy, and has never affected me on a ride. It also makes it convenient to route the fuel line away from the hot exhaust, which I think helps out with fuel boiling. In a pinch, I picture myself laying my bike onto it's right side to slosh the fuel over to the petcock, in the event of a low fuel situation. Hasn't happened yet. Good luck!

I wondered about doing that fix as a get me home measurebut had nothing to hand. Running it full time makes a lot of sence. What did you use to plug the petcock and how did you plug the T section of the carb fuel inlet. The problem I had is the fuel runs straight through the steel t section and out of the left hand stop **** fuel pipe

Novisor, Here I am about to admit to a shade-tree fix. To plug the LH petcock, I took a piece of fuel line approx 1" long and fitted a shouldered bolt with a bit of sealant into the fuel line. I think it was a 5/16" bolt, and I had hacksawed off the threaded portion. I eliminated the T. The intake on the FCR carb swivels around, and I oriented it straight up. I then placed a single piece of fuel line directly from the carb to the RH petcock. Just to be a touch anal, I put an in-line filter in the fuel line. I have been very happy with this setup.

Do you mean the fuel line from the tank to the carb?

Yes the fuel line that runs from the left hand side of the tank into metal t pipe section on the left hand side of the carb. The right hand fuel line running into the other side of the t section.

That was more or less the fix I worked through in my head when I got your first message. Had not thought about taking out the t though that makes a lot of sence in fact it is genius. Couple of quick questions where did you source the inline fuel filter? What sealent did you use on the petcock? this was my main concern as it needs to resist some fuel.

thanks again

I used some nice clear blue fuel line I found at the M/C shop (goes with the bike!), as well as a filter. The filter is a conical looking thing with a piece of compressed copper pellets in the middle. Small but effective. As to the petcock I abandoned, it now has a 1" piece of fuel line attached to it, with a plug in the end of same 1" piece. Sealant only goes on the bolt/plug. I used a sealant called 1211. Yamabond is similar, easier to find in some places. Save your T, and the modification is completely undo-able, you can go back to stock anytime.

Cheers Buzzard.

I am going to go with this mod. I will see if I can pick up a filter when I get the fuel line. I will let you know how I get on. Any idea how much actual capacity on fuel the mod drops?

I'm gonna guess 10-15 ounces. All retrievable by laying the bike over to the right side.
