Don't fuel petcocks have fine screens in them? Or is an inline fuel filter recommended for us carberated types?

Float stuck this weekend and I had gas gushing out the carb vent tubes. Found a few small particles in the float bowl drain plug cup...

Can do, but my 98 missed out. I actually take them out and put an inline filter in, one I can see and easily service. Stock, my DR650 has one in the fuel pipe where it goes into the carb. It is really small and needs needle nose pliers to remove, and you need to know its there, a real PITA. Gone now, as is the stock carb for an FCR.

Fuel filter in, flushed float bowl, etc.

Finally got to ride this weekend, and, same deal. It thinks it's a racehorse and pi$%es like one. Took off the float bowl plug and there was no dirt. Tapped on the carb from many angles and finally it quit flowing and I rode in.

I checked the float level the first time it was ever off, and that was good. Needle valve looked like new at the time, I will check it out more carefully.

If the float was set too high, why would it ever shut off? When it does it, it's not a trickle, it's a solid flow out one of the tubes, sometimes others participate. Maybe looking at which tube it is would yield a clue?

This bike sat for years, so there are lots of possibilities. If the spring plunger in the float valve is sticky, there could be times when the needle is shorter!

I'd be replacing the float-needle and seat to eliminate them. Especially if the bike sat for a long time.

Thanks, I've ordered float, valve, valve seat and o-ring, and a fuel screen. Would have ordered the pin and valve clip, but they weren't in stock!

That should cover me for parts no matter what.

Ordered from Sudco, and was pleasantly surprised at their prices. :D

Not fixed.

After about 45 min of really rough, slow stuff, engine stalls, gotta use hot start knob, this repeats and gets more frequent until batt is depleted, at which point I stop riding, then shortly after stopping, gas gushes from the overflows.

The cure is to wait until it cools, it starts and runs great.

Since I've ruled out dirt, and bad float / valve / seat, and it only happens when very hot...... duh.

It seems pipe wrap only lasts a few hours. Carb shield might work, unless the gas is boiling in the line, then that won't help.

Anybody had this problem?

Anybody have any suggestions?

It was HEAT boiling the gas!

I safety-wired some sticky heat shield to the fuel line and carb side facing the pipe, and this solved the problem.

I've ridden some hot days since then with no problems.
