Hi all,

Recently bought my old 650 back after selling it years ago.

Now I want it to be a project but a running one!

The stator has just gone so it's off for a rewire and I've been sitting out all the other little niggles. Like new fuel hoses, spoke set, cleaning and greasing all the basics.

My question is what modifications would you make to this model to get the most out of it??

I'd prefer the first mods to be ones that make it work better/more reliable not necessarily faster.

Suppose I better give the background.

As far as I know it's all standard internals, it's got the deltoro carb, 4 pot beringer calliper and cast disc, race exhaust(rino), the starter is all standard (never worked)(not bothered) standard air filter.

The kickstart is currently wobbly so I'm
On the hunt for a new lever. I'm also planning on fitting the sledge mod as I've got a fair amount of play in the lever.

So what else would you do?

-double spring valves?
-replace carb internals?
-new carb?

I've not got unlimited funds so a full strip and rebuild at the moment isn't an option but I would like to get there eventually.

Thanks all.

Hi Greg,

on my 02 650 i did the following,

KTM quad dual valve springs,
Updated the cam de-comp (dutch clog) and spring,
Newer cam (05 i think),
Cam and follower bearings,
newer cam chain guide and tensioner mod to suit,
freshened up the Dellorto.

I then came across a 41mm flat slide, this made a big difference to performance and helped a bit with starting.....it started pretty well after the Dellorto was freshened up.

If you do play with the leccy boot, R6 or CBR600 starters are stronger and the 7amp battery (i run a lithium one). Make sure the sprague is good and if needed shim the starter clutch to stop it slipping too easily.

Probably missed a few but they were the main ones to get it starting on the button and running smoother and faster.

Good luck,

Carl.

Thanks for that! Is the decomp cam in the cylinder head?

I was thinking of doing the bike in sections. Whilst I need the kick start tweaking I'll do all the other bits in there.

So was thinking do the dual springs and decomp at the same time as they are both in the head.

The carb is certainly on the list. Is the 41mm one from the newer models?

The de-comp is behind the cam chain ring on the end of the cam so could be done with your other head mods.

The newer models have the fcr carbs, mine was from a multi cylinder bike i think as it doesn't have a choke. From memory (not a good one) the crf 450's ran a 41 flat slide.

the Keihin FCR prices used to be expensive in the States and cheap over here. during the last 12-months the prices here have gone throught the friggin roof! however, i just don't see there being the same demand over here for them so i expect to find the occasional relist on ebay....eventually!

at the moment £400 for an FCR seems too much!

Hi

As Taffy can tell you, the older ones, the ones from jap bikes, are better then the ones from ktm's (Taffy calls them production carbs).
Got mine from a YZ 426.
This can be more fine tuned, more jets to crack your head :D

Always look inside of the carb, were the wheels of the slide work, this is were they wear. It's reparable but it's a pain

Thinking I may just take the deltoro off an refurb it.

Already ordered

-kick lever 2004+
- modified sledge
-oil seals and gaskets to fit
-new air filter

So hopefully it should kick a little easier and the lever should operate as it's supposed to!

Think maybe clutch or carb next?

My thinking is leave the block alone as it's working and try and sort out all the other auxiliary bits.

I'd love to redo the lot. Full rebuild using new parts but not an option at the moment.

May I ask where you got the kick lever from?
