Ok new to Berg but not to bikes. I just got the bike and the ex owner told me the electric starter never started the bike he called it an "electric assist" starter. The starter will not start the bike. I am pretty sure the battery is dead ( I will bring a load tester tomorrow from work to see if it's dead. Should the starter be able to start my bike without having to kick it?
Second. I took it for a 1 min ride today and it died on my on the road. Would not start again :(. How long is the warm up time on this bad boy? Had an XR650R sumo and it had a good amour of warm up needed I would assume the berg to be the same?
Last one. How loud is the motor? I mean this is my third or fourth 4 stroke and the motor seam to be loud as hell. The sound coming from the case is almost scaring me! I mean I heard it was a little loud but man.
Anyways let me know what you guys can. Thanks

what year is your bike?

It shouldn't stall down the road. if it is a pre-2004 then it may have a failing stator.

all Husabergs can be made to start on the button after some hard work.

it's loud? mmmm! a DVSK gets rid of a LOT of noise but the biggest culprit is the cam chain running out of tension so check that out.

Taffy

Yes, the starter has been referred to as a restarter. I always kickstart when cold. When warm I use the manual decompression lever to get the motor spinning and then release it after a few revolutions.
Yes they are cold blooded in general 4-5 minutes riding to get up to temp.Dont let it idle for more than a minute though.
Yes they are noisier than most bikes, how noisy is the question.

Its a 2005 but I will check the charging system tonight (if I can get it started). What hard work are you talking about for the starter? I got the bike because it was e-starter because my knee cant take the kick starter anymore. :(

I will try to post a vid for the motor noise. I am not really worried about it because when it runs it runs strong but I am curius and dont really want to open the motor this close to my race days 8O

yes but f it doesn't run right and sounds like a bag of nails - why would you race it?

check the cam chain. secondly remove the ignition cover and grab the flywheel with the whole of one-hand and try to rattle the crank up and down. try it in a couple of positions in the 720 degrees.

I am with you I have one month to get it sorted. I will try that tonight (if the kids give me some time :D ) and try to make a vid. Is there a manual cam chain tentioner out there for the Berg? I have always prefered the manual ones.

not as I'm aware. remember, I think you've run out of cam chain. You think that it can't adjust correctly.

believe me, it adjusts juuusssstttt fine.

I will take your word for it. As I said I dont know Bergs much and you seam to know quite a bit :D I have had some bad experiences with cam chain tentioner. I have had 2 go on me. One on my built GSXR track bike (in a race of all things) and it was brand new. And one on my Yz. But the bike was older so knocking it up to age.

Thanks again for the advise.

I did a load test on the batt last night and its done. Going to have to order a new one. I think I will go with the CTZ7S. And maybe a bigger starter from Taffy eventually. Took it out yesterday did about 5 feet and came back. Ran like crap. I had dumped the gas and put a fresh tank of 94octane but still ran rough. Took the carb apart and its was full of sludge. Cleaned it and now it runs great.
When I kicked started it she made a weird noise from the kickstarter side. I am going to take the cover off this weekend. Is there a specific bearing or gear I should be looking for that is commen for problem? It sounds like a bearing is gone on the kickstarter side but only when it kick it.
Thanks for the help guys.

I have a 2005 fs650e and I always use the e-starter with no problems hot or cold. these engines are very noisy but I bet either your main bearings are gone or your camchain is gone. If you remove your side cover replace your waterpump seal and watch out for the starter gear to come out of place, when it does it will rub against the back of the clutch basket. when you get this bike running properly HOLD-ON because these bikes are torque pigs. every morning I get onto my bike and it puts an evil grin on my face as I'm ripping down the roads

I think that bike already has the bigger starter already.
Need a little more info on your kick start noise. Most common problem is the shaft breaking or the sledge wearing. There really isn't a bearing to go bad. Perhaps it's the torque limiter your hearing? Chances are you won't see much if you pull the cover. If you do pull the cover be careful to not let the kick start shaft come out with the cover. Your first time reinstallation of the kick start shaft will require you to be fluent in a few languages of curse words.

Thanks for the advise. Yeah got her going with a freash battery. I am going to do the valve adjustment this week and oil change. I only went for a little around the block run but man this is a pretty fun bike. It makes my XR650R (street legal) feel under powered. Cant wait for the first good run this weekend up the twisties and my first track day with her in september. Was suppost to do one at the end of the month but I want to make sure she is 110% to go first.

Seams like everything I do on the big pig is a bag curse words  But she runs now. I will post a vid soon for the noise. The more I go the more I think its just a Berg thing.
