Hi..

My FS 650 '05 is using oil.... at least I think 8O

It uses about a half a liter in 5 hours of engine time.. - I ride it like a pig, but isn't I a bit much?

The engine has had a complete rebuild, done by Dave Clarke for only about 20 hours ago - after the previous owner blew the engine up (he never checked the valves...)

The thing is, that it doesn't smoke and can't see any leaks - or am I missing something??

do you have the original breather vent on the bike. ( the y-pipe that connects the valve cover to the frame). if so remove your airfilter and look in the frame, you might see some oil in there. I blocked off the rear breather hole and my oil consumption problem went away.

How much oil are you putting in. when the bike is standing straight the oil level should only be at the bottom of the window (if engine is cold).

Thx... I know about oil level.. and I'm topping up the to the window.. I'll have a look at the tubes..

Allthough I must have miscalculated the consumption, it's "only" 1/4 of a liter in 5 hours..

make sure the engine vent has the sponge in it to suppress the oil going up into the frame.

call me if it still continues to drink oil.

I had quick look today... It appears that oil are going into the frame...
There inside of the frame was coated in a thin layer of oil, it also looks clearly like have been moving from the top of the frame towards the carb.. and there was about a teaspoon or two of oil in the bottom of the frame..

not to stress the point too much but do you have the sponges in the breather tube?

I saw your post, but only after I came back from my workshop.. I gonna have a look later, no worries :)

My FS has 350 hours and only uses about 50ml in 5 hours time. Something's amiss. When you check your oil next time, turn your bike around and check it again with the front wheel where the back was. Maybe your shop isn't quite level and you're overfilling it? I've always found a little oil in the frame too, and a small puddle btween the boot and belmouth.

Mine takes 1 litre, and a little bit more if I'm changing the filter too.

then make sure they are pressed down a little. oil shouldn't be getting past the sponge.

other than that you have had a partial seizure, the piston is now fecked and the oil ring is wedged into the ring groove of the piston by the swarf off the piston itself. miight not be but that is one of the more likely results you're likely to see?

Hmm... sounds bad... Shouldn't it be smoking then???

The engine pulls like a beast still :)

.."they are pressed down"

Should there be more than one sponge? There's only one about the size of a golfball..

Problem solved - I think...Re: FS 650.. using oil??

Hmm...

I seem to have found out why my Berg is using oil...

Apparently it leaks from the rear breatherhose, and specially while wheeling... As I have improved my wheeling skills greatly over the least couple of days, this became very clear to me today when I saw this after a series of longer wheelies..

Can I blok the rear breatherhose without problems?? I don't plan to stop doing wheelies :bounce3:

yes!

simplest way is to fix a kind of cork a little way up the rear pipe.

Glad you found the problem SmaRTrxxv!

While on the topic of wheeliing, and oil, is the oil pickup in the gearbox far back enough to avoid any oil starvation issues when riding on the back wheel for a while?

I held my casing at an angle to see if I could gauge this, and I was a bit concerned that the oil strainer maybe sits too high and may be causing oil starvation when all the oil is in the back of the gearbox...

Like SmaRTrxxv said, I dont want to stop wheeliing !
