I have an 02 FS650, it's a heavily modified flat tracker. I bought it mid last year, first ride it was like a rocket ship in the carpark, but as soon as I got it on track and went WO it just bogged and lost power and pretty much could only be ridden up to 50% throttle before bogging. Didn't worry too much as it was getting a complete overhaul.

Rebuilt it all after this, new exhaust and a bunch of other changes and spent a couple evenings on the dyno getting it set up - Taffy needle in the FCR, ignition timing method from here etc. Starts straight up on the button and not too bad to kick over either. One the dyno it ran really well for extended periods of time, but only an inertia dyno so no real load.

Went out on the track and again, as soon as it's under load it just bogs and is basically unrideable.

I've been through the whole wiring harness, and replaced most of the switches for new ones, it had new coil and plug, stator readings are exactly what they should be.

So does this seem like an SEM ignition issue? Or is there anything else that may cause this behaviour? Mechanical or electrical

clearly under load she sucks harder and deeper. you need to get that load up on the dyno. then you may replicate it.

let's be fair though, the guy only bought my needle. he said that he knew what he was doing, so with an answer like that you have to leave people to get on with life.

that air filter is too small IMHO and it should have a bellmouth inside of it.

what make of igniton stator have you got in there?
open coiled = chinese
black plastic or black/red plastic = the original OEM SEM unit.

cheers

Taffy

It has the aftermarket stator from your website 101252, with resistances measuring the same as per spec.

While the air filter could be restricting top end, it was running 'fine' with that air filter and standard exhaust, until it wasn't. So I don't believe it is an air flow issue. Besides, I've trialled small air filters on other bikes and the choking feeling is very different from this.

The carb has been fully disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned so it can be certain there are no blockages so it's not fuel starvation.

It's almost like there is some sort of electrical trip, we had no issue getting the bike to redline on the dyno, but once it 'tripped', now if I go start the bike up it is quite obviously not running correctly, like it is not sparking consistently. Is there any way to test the ignition unit itself?

Thanks

I know what the problem is.

well, you presumably timed the stator to the sheet i sent with the stator? marked the flywheel as well right?

regards

Taffy

The stator was on the bike already, and the sheet isn't with the other documents. It was timed based on a thread here, with the extra mark etc. Thinking we cocked up and running way out? Are you able to send the sheet over?

i have a video of how to time them on my facebook page. you saw the video so where has it gone wrong?

you make it read like it is my stator.

Taffy

Cheers, that's a useful vid, I'll double check it all in the weekend. Does the igntion itself have may issues if this is set up ok?

Why are you thinking electrical issue as opposed to carburettor issue? Isn’t there different jets supplying fuel at different RPMs, so a problem with the jetting could be a reason for the low power at higher RPMs?
I’m new to motorcycle tinkering, love to learn more and I hope you can figure it out and keep us posted. I’ve a -02 FE650 as well, and she’s moody!

Cheers

The carb has been completely disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned so confident there are no blockages, everything is working as it should.

Regarding the stator timing, the SEM unit has an alignment mark on the generator so as Taffy's video shows, it's pretty straight forward to line up. With the replacement gen that I have, there is no mark, so what should I use as a reference to time to?
