I'm having a problem with front wheel hitting the header on a -04 fe650, wouldn't be a matter for me otherwise, but my tire has half inch studs on it and it's making some nasty scars on the pipe. The problem isn't huge as of yet, but I need to soften the front to keep it from going all over the place in the snow.

Is there a smart way of avoiding the front wheel from hitting the header? I heard -05 header pipe is different and the front wheel wouldn't scrape it.

I bought a late release '05 650 that came with the redesigned header and kickstarter in the crate. The dealer installed the updated pieces and said the original '05 and earlier had the tire clearance problems you describe. An '06 and up should fix it, but you'll also need the newer kickstart lever.

I think I'll buy a 07 header, kickstart and fs650's triple clamps with 17 offset second hand and change fork bushings, seals and oil so I'll get (hopefully) the front initial travel smoother to keep the front from slipping left and right all the time.

The newer design header should fit older muffler, right?

I'm not sure about other markets, but in Australia all 04 models were recalled to have the header pipe replaced. At the same time owners were given an additional update kit that came with a thermostat kit, a set of graphics, the new 05 kickstarter, a bar pad and couple of other bits & pieces.
