Can't seem to fix it. Found a grooved shaft first time, then set a new seal backwards which worked for a few races. Now I put a tube in the weep hole and it alternates water and oil. It's like a constant loss system. Taffy mentioned the balancer bearing can cause the wp seal to groove the shaft? I hear some oil blow by is normal, but I think that seal is toast too. Something about replacing the shaft bearing?
Can't quite figure out how a rubber seal is wearing a groove in a hardened steel shaft. Help!

If your leaking oil you will want to replace the bearing as well.
No luck with the Kawasaki seal?

No, the ID of the kawi seal is larger than advertised so doesn't fit. Bought a couple of single lip seals from rocketseals.com that may work. Looks like a 4th clutch cover removal is coming.
The balancer bearing felt fine on the last check. Can't figure how that could cause this. Ideas?

The good news is that when it's working right, the bike is a terror on the track! Just picked up a Bridgestone contingency for $100. That will buy a lot of experimental seals ;)

Looking forward to a permanent fix, and i agree, cant understand how a rubber seel is grooving a Steel shaft soooo badly.

I use the stock water pump seal what seal do you guys use?
(Around 370 hrs on the shaft) the shaft is rough.

Not had any leaks from the water pump seal exept once. My dealer put in a seal from a bearing supplier in there (rubber base seal) orginal is metal.
Aslo when you put on the cover use something to protect the seal from the lip of the cirlclip grove (I have som kind of a heat shrink tube) to do that.

My bike has always leaked oil from there, bought orangebergs weephole fix to address (the oil leak) got some sand in there wich destroyed the orangebergs weephole fix. Put in the orginal bearing and seal, But to my amazement no oil leak!!!

Regards

When replacing the seal, be very carefully how you press it in. The seal outer is so thin, if it is slightly skew, the seal deforms and is no longer round, causing constant weeping. I have made a tool to fit into the seal and prevents the outer edge from deforming.

I have found a double lip seal which i have used in the past its slightly wider and seals in a different area on the shaft, its not viton but works ok. Its a rubber seal not metal.

Well.......are you going to share???

Just changed the wp and oil seal again today with a 5mm deep single lip rocket seal. 4th attempt, still leaks slowly through the 1/8 tube I ran to the catch can. Good news is I can change the seals out in less than an hour with all the practice I've had!
The small diameter tube makes the loss look more dramatic than it really is, but can't understand why it wont seal? Never had this problem with my 450.

I've had this difficulty in the past with removing/refitting the clutch cover, and subsequent weep hole leaks.

Whats folks are saying about the care required when fitting the cover to prevent the very slightest displacement of the seals cannot be overstated.

Also there are 2 options for these water pump seals that I'm aware of, the metallic and rubber variety I think. The metallic is very difficult to fit square, the rubber is much more forgiving, but may not last as long is what I've been told in the past.

I'd be interested to see a close-up photo of the grooving in the shaft mind you, can you take any pictures so we can see what this looks like?

I put grease on the balancer shaft on the last swap out and it went on super easy. I'm sure I didn't nip the seal, but it still leaks real slow. I routed the weep hole tube to the catch can. Problem solved :)

I have plugged the weep hole in my bike with some silicone, after it started leaking last time.
I hope it is not a problem if it is plugged?

Will build up pressure and eventually breaks or starts leaking oil etc etc

And potentially result in oil in coolant, of worse, coolant in oil. The weep hole is there for agood reason, do not plug it.
