Hi I have a 2004 fs450 and I just did a complete rebuild on the motor. When I put it all back together I added the synthetic oil and then coolant. First thing I noticed was that I had coolant leaking from the weep whole. As soon I started up the bike I noticed that the oil changed into a milky color. you would think that coolant got into the oil but there wasn't any coolant in the oil when I drained it, and if I let the bike sit for a long period of time, the oil turns back to its normal form. That's when I noticed that the oil has microscopic bubbles and is foamy after it is started up. Does anyone know why this is happening, and is it safe to run the bike like this? I haven't rode it since because I am afraid of damaging the cylinder and piston. (I added the pic of it)

Nothing to worry about. That's just how the oil looks while the motor is running. You're not the first person who's been concerned about it.

Dont worry i did the same thing and drained oil and you are correct its returns to normal when left to sit and settle. Its just until the oil gets a bit of colour into it. But if there is coolant coming from weep hole consistantly i might be a bit more worried.

Waterpump seal got nicked and is leaking?
I did not know you could use synthetic oil for break in..

so do you think i should change the oil, and then just ride it even if the oil still looks like that?

I would disagree to some extent here.

coolant will mix with oil and the only way to spot it is to put your fingers deep into the oil and it'll show. you should also be losing the LEVEL of coolant you have if we're going to get this right. best to fill it to the brim and look for bubbles and also see if the coolant disappears away slowly.

the coolant could be leaking in two places BTW? you are losing it at the weep hole which indicates that the waterpump seal has gone but if you have it in your oil you are ALSO losing it at one of three places:
water jacket O ring (between engine and left-cover)
HG
liner O rings

the HG will probably cause bubbles but the other two are harder to seperate. the W/J O ring needs to be a minimum of 2.7mm thick, easy to replace and worth starting there.

Hi Taffy,
Mr. ebayy1229 stated he's losing coolant from the typical weep hole leak. He then stated his concern for the looks of the oil while his motor is running and how it returns to normal, not milky after sitting. I'm just letting him know the picture he provided is typical to how the oil looks through the sight glass while the motor runs. It can be quite alarming if you've never seen it before.

Sure, if he's losing lots of coolant and his oil level is going up (which he hasn't mentioned), the coolant could be entering in several places.

Thank you for trying to help me! you and log may be correct, but my friend has the same bike and he says his oil is a little foamy but doesn't look like mine after running it. i believe that a VERY small amount of coolant is mixing with my oil. i am going to replace the water seal again, the water jacket o-ring, and possibly the bearing. What is the Liner O-ring, and where is it located? id like to change that as well. i don't believe it is the head gasket because i just replaced it.
thanks John

best to do your second oil change and see if it hasn't settled down. would suggest that you try filling to the brim and look for those bubbles as well. liner 'O' rings are on the liner and will only have gone if you fried the motor or have done a rebuild.

Taffy
