Hello all,

Broke my throttle cable this weekend. Checking out the 89-96 parts manual, and they specify from 89-91 a round slide cable, and from 92- a flat slide carb. Didn't bergs always use the PHM38 with the round slide?? I'm confused. I know I have a round slide, and am not worried about what to order, but...

I have never heard of anything other than a Dellorto PHM38 and the Kehnin carbs used on these bikes.

Did use flat slides around 93 to 96. Is a 2 stroke carb with an adjustable air bleed system to control low speed fuel mixtures. Signal to the jets is a bit sharper so some MX guys liked them. Off roaders did not as they were sensitive to alatitude changes. I traded mine to Barry at Premier for a 38 roundslide. Bike was a 96FC501. Installed a 36 Mikuni pumper on my 96 FE400 (Was quite a chore) and scrapped the Flat slide on that bike as well.

I had a 38 Flatslide on an '96 FE600. They seem to give more HP but it also made them harder to start and hesitate when giving the bike full throttle

I had a 38 Flatslide on an hey clarkkent iv this might be an old thread but u could really help me out man.iv bought an old fe 600 which had already been fitted with a 38 flat side..wat was your set up how many turns out did u have the mix screw to get this thing to start?

the flat slide I liked, but the slide wears out and does the needle and needle jet. when th e slide wears it becomes hard to start the bike. check the slide and needle. the flat slide means it is like a shutter that fires fuel into the bike. The round slide that came later was more friendly and I think was used to help electric starting. Great carbi and less maintenance that the flat slide....

I got rid of my 1999 fe600 e. It was a great bike and the ignition advance made a big difference over the earlier ones. I would use the standard jetting to start. The pipe that was popular then was the Big Gun that was a company started by an american rider who broke his back while riding a Vertmatti...can't remember his name, the pipes were good. If its a darker colour than silver it could be a SPECS pipe, but they are usually marked with that name. Either way the jetting will need to be perhaps made more rich than standard. At idle the Dellortos run rich anyway so you should be right to start with and then look at maybe increasing the main if you need to. The main thing is to make sure the ignition is clean and drill a small hole in the case just back from the cover to allow water to steam out if it gets in. Good luck

PS:The good things about Dellorto is that you can easily change the jetting and needle clip, unlike the battle with Keihins.

Hey testpilot, looks like fe600racer has answered your question and I'm onto my 4th Berg since the 600 so my memory on settings are a bit faded. A couple of points though is to adjust air screw regularly when hot and to make starting easier is to have a fully charged battery. I found that the electric start drain power from the ignition system and only provided a week spark.

mines an fe 600 m8 doesnt have electric start doesnt even have electric stop ffs but cheers for your point ill try not to leave anything electric switched on n case it drains the battery thanks mate!
