Fitment of cooling fan

Hi Guys,
I'e spent the days looking at gallery pics and reading backwards regarding fitment of a cooling fan to my 04' 550. I'm running the 06 up tank so there's a ton of room on the rhs to locate it.

I've been trying to understand just how the standard kit of say the 06 mounts to the radiator itself, I've scoured the site and the net and have come to figure one must stretch the fins out of the way and mount the fan direclty to the radiator. I've read and understand the options of the options ot make it run, either 100 / 95 switch using soem parts from a 300 KTM 2 stroke and splice it into the main cooling line etc....or toggle swtich ....or get a thread fitted to a spare radiator I have and mount the switch as per the KTM's.

My questions are more so to understand any pitfalls or correct procedures for mountign the fan to the radiator itself....are there specific spacer / fasteners used that keep teh body of the fan just slightly off the radiator so it won't rub through or am I being too analytic. I've tried with no luck to identify the part number of the standard kit or looked for info but as it's not a new bike I've had little luck.

Can anyone who's done it offer any ideas / part numbers or Berg fitment direction son a PDF etc so I can get the job done correctly first time round. Appreciate and input / pics that can be offered

I did the upgrade to my 04 450 Bit the bullet and bought a 06 Rad. Rad comes with holes for fan kit and fitting for thermostat The fan comes with plastic inserts to put thru holes in rad. I'd rather do it to factory specs. Then I know everything is done right and its runs at the right temperature.

Mounting is very easy and fool proof. 4 plastic ties that slide between the fins and mount the fan flush to the radiator core. Plenty of latitude on where to mount it. It will come with instructions that are very easy and straight forward. Don't sweat it.
Fans mounts are similar to these.

The Husaberg fan kit I fitted to my 06 came with plastic dowels that go into the fin area, the fan is then screwed directly to the rear of the radiator through these dowels so the fin/core is not crushed, heads of the screws are about the size of a 10 cent piece

You can get the mounts berger showed off ebay but they cost more on there than from a auto part store. search "transmission cooler mount" this is the same mount style i used to fit my fans, i have fit them directly to the radiator with no buffer in between with good result, at our local parts stores they always keep a few of these kits in stock and they are very cheap ($2.50us) i dont have the part number but if you tell them you want a powersteering cooler or transmission cooler zip tie style radiator mounting package thingy, they will know what you mean. also these things are like zip ties, once they get put on you have to cut them off, also make sure they are where you want them because you really have to push them through the fins of you radiator and it will open up the fins a bit the first time and will leave signs that they were installed once if you take them back out and remount somewhere else.

The fan kit comes with everything you need to mount the fan.

Last year I mounted a Spal fan on my 07 using zipties, hard plastic tubing and washers, been holding up fine.

The tubing I used fit snugly into the factory radiator holes, the zipties fit snugly into the tubing.
I cut the plastic tubing just a tad smaller than the thickness of the radiator so the fan wouldn't move after the zip ties were secure.

The best engineering solutions are the simplest, that one is gold, light, strong and cheap.

Just a thought though as it appears such a good mount it will be forgotten about, perhaps a rubber washer under the steel washer to stop chaffing on the gallery pipes of the radiator. I'm wondering if the little weather proof O rings from a tek screw would make a good vibration damper/anti chafe protector for the unit?

The plastic tube between the fins is a great idea as plastic cable ties can chafe through aluminium in a short time.

That's a good idea about the flat rubber tek washers Mick, I got a million of them- give it a shot tomorrow.
The fan's been installed for over a year now, and still no wiggle or wear..
I originally used the BMW 90/95 switch, but found it ran almost all the time. Switched over to the 95/100, now it comes on only when needed.

Ask an you shall get...guys this is exactly the answer I was looking for pics and all. My radiator doesn't have any holes or mounts but I can see where it shoudl go and can spread the fins to make it work, I'll run the 95 / 100 switch also

Since the pics were taken, I've added rubber washers (Per Mick's suggestion, thanks Mick) between the metal washers and radiator- fan doesn't wiggle around one bit now, nice & snug.

I fitted up the KTM fan kit off my 05exc onto my fe450. Simply cable tied the through the fins and around outside of radiator frame.
Same wiring attachments and used the ktm thermostat. Easy as, works great, only took about 15min all up and had no issues in 20hrs.
Do you think I should change the thermostat? it does seem to come on early but I'd rather that than too late !

I'll be doing the same mate, I've got a later model Kato kit that'll be fitted up using the zip tye type recommended by the forum team, looks like it'll work well. I'll use the 95 / 100 temp switch (standard Kato temp range from what I can understand)

I've also been doing some homework on this product http://liquidintelligence115.com.au/ and most of the guys I ride with (bergs and Kato's) are setting up and running the product, between the two I think my 550 will stay in the perfect temp range regardless of condition....will report once all i sset up and I've had a chance to test the theory
