Well, Just the warm up really, I will take it out to Clear Creek on friday. and give a true first ride report.

I got home yesterday and threw on the new cycra hand guards, sans plastic and rode off to my buddies 5 acres of grass motocross track. all I can say is... Awesome! As far as my novice butt can tell, Dan had it jetted spot on kick once and it roared to life when cold, and the hot button works sweet and it ran great. I had forgotten how much more grunt the larger bikes had compared to the 470... and the bike almost made me pay for my forgetfulness when I launched myself off the first table top a little to easily... a bit farther and higher than i am used to... 8O

I had dan respring it for my weight.. .48 race tech up front and a WP 81-99 pds in the back. It is very stiff at the moment but I can tell after a few rides that it will soften up and be pretty good. (at least until the end of summer when I plan on throwing the stock springs back on) the traction on the grass track was sweet after a few days of light rain and with some sandy loam soil under the freshly mowed weeds... that front tire did not want to stay on the ground! :D

The sound of the motor, while still distinctivley berg, is much tighter than the 02 470, not as much rattling and more of a nice mechanical whine... The clock reads 1.5 hours and have 42 miles on the odometer ( 25 miles round trip on canal banks to and from my buddies place..)

I am very happy :D can't wait to take it out and slog through the mud on friday...

Thanks Dan & Ann for making it happen...

Re: First ride on my "new" 04 550... or..... the r

Okay, Today I went on my official "first ride". I will preface it by saying it was totally worth it, and a deductive mind would see that because i am writing this i lived to tell the tale... :D

We had originally planned on traveling down to a place called Clear Creek, CA a LARGE blm property that has tons of open high speed trails and hills to climb. a great place to get to know your bike, not to many rocks and minimal tree lined single track. But we got a late start and decided to go someplace a bit closer to home...

Deer Creek rec area in the lower elevations of the great Sierra Nevada mountains. a place known for it's diversity of trails, from fast fire roads to 13 tooth front sprocket, 1 gear, steep, boulder and root strewn, narrow, lever breaking, finger snapping tree lined, rutted out, single track.

today was a perfect day, weather wise. On our way in we had an abnormal amount of slipping and sliding in the trucks due to the VERY slick mud and copious amounts of water that seemed to be flooding the streams and creeks in the area. ( a sign of things to come)

When we arrived at the staging area the puddles still had the ice on them. we could tell that in the recent past a number of trucks had been stuck in the mud so we stayed on the edges and unloaded on the high side of the staging area.

gear on, trucks locked. and ROAR! the 550 came to life with ease. I came with two buddies, one a STRONG level A rider (a few years back he approached the pro level but kids and stuff ....) and the other a novice like myself.

off we went to our favorite "expert" level single track hill climb to start the day.... BAD MOVE 8O I seemed to have forgotten that I had not been riding in almost 10 months, and I must have really had the jetting hammered on the 470, because compared to this it was like riding a xr200. I was not ready for the hit of this bike.

The water was running in rivlets down the road, and as the lead guy took off I could tell that I was in for a very rough day....

The mud! it was like trying to ride in warm butter :D as we approached the first hill, you drop 100 feet steeply into a gully and immediately begin a white knuckle ride up a rutted out 200 foot hill climb, that on a dry day is challenging enough. today though, with the sun shining and the snow QUICKLY melting, it was literally a nightmare... off went the level A rider, 3/4 of the way up after spinning his tires and bouncing around like a pin ball and throwing enough mud to change the topography of the surrounding area, he turned around and said, %$#%$ That, lets find another way.

Now, I am not stupid, but I do have a streak that won't let me not do something that I have done in the past, so off I went ignoring the looks of bewilderment on my friend faces, Hell I have one of the best bikes made, with more power than i can use, I can do this... right?.... right???...

long story short, after 4 attemps at the hill, and and having fallen countless times and bounced of of every rock I gave up... it was to damn slick...

so we turned around, and went in search of better traction, but we had to climb out of the gully we came into to do that, so i was second in line and off i went following the level A guy, who is always in control.. right... RIGHT??? WRONG again... as he started climbing i gave him a pretty good lead, and as we approached 3/4 of the way out he suddenly steered to the left, thinking, hmm he must want to try that difficult line, I decide to go right and continue with my momentum, because we all know what kind off hell to pay it is when you have to stop on a steep, mud like lard, trail.

well as I approached my buddy who continued to head left, both of our bikes throwing mud like politicians, I headed to the right of the 6 foot wide trial. Then suddenly his bike hit a root and BAM he was thrown right in front of me! 8O OH crap! and before I new it we were both sliding back down the hill in a twisted pile of yellow, blue, orange and black. at the bottom of the hill we both gave each other the thumbs up telling us the we each OK and then a middle finger telling each of us what we thought of the situation.

well finally, we made it out of the gully, and headed for the west side of the mountain where we mistakenly believed it would be a bit dryer....

to get there we had to take some of our favorite single track and I was POOPED! already and it was only 1 hour into our ride...

the single track was awesome. tight, rutted out, mud to the axles and FUN!

then we hit the SNOW! one-two feet deep on top with MUddy ruts underneath.. so this is what hell is like when it freezes over...

WELL remember in a previous post when i rhetorically asked "I wonder what I have forgotten?" My novice butt had forgotten to stop fight the ruts, and to make it worse you could not see where they were because of the snow. I dumped that bike so many times I drained half the gas tank through the vent hose on top... Can I just say that my day was beginning to SUCK!

well about 1 hour later I seemed to get my grove back, and was really enjoying myself. the west side of the mountain was a bit drier and the bike was running great. a awesome mix of fire road and trail, nice berms to jump and a few steams to cross... UNTIL

A wash out.. the conversation went something like this;

Level A guy: if i go, you have to also.
ME: Dude, I can handle that, how deep can it be? I can see the bottom...
Level A guy: umm... deep...
Other Buddy: idiots...I am eating lunch...
ME: Dude I have the best bike made and tons of power, hence I am invincible!
Other Buddy: I repeat... Idiots...

so... not one to back down from a challenge, off level A guy went and picked a great line... out he came the other side with water only reaching half way up the cylinder.

I followed, but unfortunately hell had frozen again and i slid out of his line and into water up to the bottom of the seat... and stalled the bike. I immediately hit the hot button and... the bike roared to life and i threw open the throttle and, like a scalded cat thrown into a tub of ice water, i came shooting out of the creek and up the gully embankment and launched myself 10 feet in the air....

BUT I LANDED IT! it was sweet! It totally looked like a intended to do it!

I rode for another hour thinking pretty highly of myself and wishing i had been able to get it on film, knowing that i would never look that good riding ever again...

And I was right...

Next Chapter:

Dude did you see that tree!? It just moved right in front of me!... or otherwise known as DAN, I NEED LOTS OF NEW PLASTIC! 8O

you see I have to go to bed... I have been punished for my sins and my arse really hurts from the stiff new springs.... more tomorrow...

Excellent write up, but no pictures?
What's up with that? :D

I'd guess the camera drowned!

Hey Jared,

I am glad you had fun up there! Concerning the roots: you can make the situation a whole lot better, we (www.merceddirtriders.com) will have a workday up there to fix some of the trails, as soon as weather allows. I'll let you know, so you can join us with a shovel! And: let me know next time, before you head up there: my fixed motor needs to be broken in ... and some surplus plastics broken off ...

Franz

ahhh Pictures, Ummm... well... see it is a good thing that I had crushed the little digital camera in the first hill, because I really did not want to have to document this day of follies... no, I actually did break the camera and I really did plan on taking pictures for everyone to see...

but now onto part DUEX... or otherwise known as - Honey, I have to spend more money on my new bike....

So here we are ripping down some fire roads, and I am finding it much easier getting and keeping that front wheel up while hitting the small ponds we are going through, soon we turn off and hit some more single track. I am trying ride like i did with my apparently anemic 470 and I am soon to be punished for it, I am feeling pretty good, my speed is okay I I am threading through the trees and in and out of ruts and an remembering what it was like to have confidence.. so i pick up the pace a bit.. standing up and throwing the bike from side to side, I come up on a small rise, the front wheel comes up as a crest, and soon discover that the trial takes a slight jog to the left and there is a DEEP rut and roots on both sides, I quick tap on the brake and the front wheel comes under control and i am able to get the bike lined up in the rut, the mud is thick and gooey and i have to get on the throttle to get out of it, so i do that...

(what I have not mentioned yet is the sad fact that the arm pump i experienced so badly on the old fe600 had returned and my right hand is numb and I am having a difficult time controlling the throttle)

I hit the throttle but a little bit to much and the bike grabs hold and jumps out of the rut and it is all I can do to hang on, I am fighting for control as I go bouncing off roots and rocks, not wanting to fall (I had done that enough already) suddenly I realize that I am headed for a tree about two feet in front of me, I am traveling a lot faster than I should be and ...

well, for a myriad of reasons I decided to have a little bark sandwich...

There I am sitting on a stump.. when the level A guy rides up and says " you realize your wife is going to kill you" as he surveys the shattered plastics and headlight.

I acknowledged that and agreed. I was going to be in trouble. I had just done what every person dreads, literally "breaking" in your new bike

BUT I KEPT RIDING! :D i was having a blast

The rest of the day consisted of more mud, more spinning tires, and more falling. I was very tired and I think mentally my game was over...

when I got home, I cleaned up the bike, and took inventory of the damage

front fender = shattered
headlight and headlight mask= destroyed
left rad shroud = cracked
radiator =nice big dent but not leaking :(

boots = broken buckle
digital camera = toast

This was by far the most expensive day riding I have every had, and the first time I have ever ran into a tree, or broke plastic for that matter...

Boss you sure you want me to come ride with you? I was a pretty sad site...

Until next time...

now I must go and order some parts...

Front fender, check
Headlight and shroud, check check
Rad shroud, check
Camera, check

I have done all of those things but it took me about a year to do it.

WOW, that sucks but look on the bright side, you didn't break your arm.

Oh yeah

Broken arm, check.

My latest technique of justifying buying the new 450, gear, stuff and more stuff is how cheap it really is as compared to the last 2 1/2 years of medical bills from crashes on 2 wheels.. It's like pocket change so that makes plastic and radiators realllly cheap. Glad it wasn't tendons and bones. Your story brought back many memories of similar experiences --
new bikes, peer pressure and difficult terrain. Sounds like you had a great time and a memory maker. XLNT!

So i need some input from people, since i have to replace some plastic... I was think what people like the best, The front fender, mask and shrouds in blue or the same in yellow?

I was thinking about switching it to blue, (it came yellow) since the only one of those that is not broken in the right shroud. I was thinking of sticking with the blue background graphics so all you could really see would be the yellow Husaberg lettering.

OR  all i would have to do would to make it look like a force bike would be to buy those parts in black and spring a bit more for the black rear piece and a black seat cover...

...

hahaha funnyiest thing I ever heard....you're lying there all busted up and the both you start to worry about the wife being pissed about money........ how true is that. That could a TV sitcom line.

Risky, Great write up. What is this mud you talk about, 112 days without measureable rain here in west Texas. Dan is the man for black plastic.

How about putting it back stock but using the FORCE graphics

I had considered that, I would have to change the blue rear plastic to yellow, and the I would have to decide if i liked the exisiting 04 seat cover with the blue semi-stripes leading into the black graphics on the shrouds... how would that look?

does Guts racing make a black seat cover for these bergs

darn decisions... :?

Perhaps the factory Force tall black seat would be a good choice. How tall are you?

I just did a Guts Racing cover on my kids YZ85. It came out good but next time I would pay for professional installation.

I decided on all Blue plastic except obviously for the tank.. I got the oem 04 graphics kit so all you will really see on the shrouds is the yellow husaberg lettering.

I also ordered a pair of Boss's rad guards to help protect the dent I aready put in the radiator.

When it is all back together I will post pics of the new ride...

when i crack all this plastic up I will switch to all yellow, and then on the next tree i will switch to black...

So, are you saying that after the BOSS ride, you're switching to black?
