Hi - Thanks to the very useful "Hard Start Guide" I have diagnosed that I need a new stator for my FE501E (due to a failure between the red/black wires). From reading other posts it seems that you can get them rewound, but I cannot find anywhere that does rewind them. Does anyone know of such a place? (Preferably in the midlands).

Cheers, Rob

There is a guy in Portugal, but shipping back and forth will cost a bundle and take time if you're not in Europe. Check Taffy's "owner's manual version XX" (link at the bottom of all of his posts) for the address. Or search for the word "portugal" in the forums.

I am interested as well, I am going to do the steps from the hard start guide, I guess my starting issues may come from the stator or the ignition.

In the meantime, Trailtech seems to do this service in the US:

Someone posted a linked to a stator that gave much more juice than the regular SEM. Costs around $100, from what I remember. Does anybody remember the link?

Also, sorry to hijack the link, but how much does it cost to replace the SEM ignition with a Kokusan? Parts#, FAQ, links, etc... would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and welcome aboard!
What year is your bike? Mine is an 01.

Rewinding the SEM does not really seem feasable at this time. There have been reports of a few small shops rewinding them with mixed results.
You can try to wade through these threads for some additional information.

hello robbo and welcome!

only one country speaks english and has a place called the midlands! i would seriously consider sending my SEM to this bloke in portugal: apparently he is honest and does a fine job. he sounds great value and really knows his stuff.

postage is the same as the UK usually so try him.

alternately you should go onto ebay. there is a brand new one on there for sale NOW!

Hey look at this short link that doesn't stretch the page to hell and back!!!!

Well, let's see... English speaking country with a "Midlands" region....

http://midlands.kzn.org.za/midlands/

Hey maybe it's Johnny Clegg on a dirt bike...

Seriously, Touratech does not know anything about SEM stators... Yet.

If I manage to take a photo of the stator without the plastic mold, I may be able to get an answer.

Mine seems to be glued, and Bob is in Mississippi, so I don't know what is holding the darn thing so hard in the cover.

Sorry for the confusion but Taffy was right - Midlands UK. Thanks for the replies but I think I am going to try and find somewhere to rewind it. If I do, and the results are OK then I will forward the details. Cheers, Rob

I was joking about the South African Midlands.

If you need a new stator, the one that fits the 1995 LC4s is apparently the same and plenty over here used it to replace their defective SEM.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Robbo have you tried DCR yet? They had quite a few on the shelf when I was last round there for a coil. Plus he's got a barn full of bikes partially stripped that could possibly donate one for your bike. Either that or you could try Keith at SMR in Radcliffe he's always been able to source parts for me.

as far as i know, the KTM unit is the same and can be purchased without the flywheel(cheaper). i threw my FE501e stator in my friends 97 620 to conclude that his stator was failing, and the bike fired.

i think KTM used SEM on LC4 right up til about 2000-2001.

should be plenty around. As many have stated on this site, lettign the SEM breath is critical, and may also explain why they last longer on the KTM's (breather hole standard)

JJW: I will have to take a look at an LC4 next time, but where is the breather hole located and how is it protected against water infiltration?

the hole is not protected against water infiltration. the idea is that water gets in there via condensation or leaky seals one way or another, so the best fix is to get it out.

the drain hole on a KTM is in teh lower ignition compartment through the engine case. it is tapped and has a 10mm "spout" which is screwed in. i don't think that is necessary.

The SEM on my friends KTM failed a couple of months after a particualrly muddy wet ride. the drain hole was blocked with mud. that was late 2004 on a 1997, so 7 years isn't too bad is it???

if i had another SEM 'Berg i would drill a 5mm hole in the engine case and leave it alone. any water that gets in will quickly escape.

i guess this idea could be refined by tapping the hole and having a very short bolt that you could insert if you knew you were going to be riding through a lot of water, but then you would have to remove it again to let it drain.

some people have breather hoses that ventilate etc but this is prob not necessary. keep it simple.

also of note, my old yamaha and also my 2005 300EXC have ignition covers that DO NOT SEAL at the bottom. there is an inbuilt dent in the surface that the gasket runs on to let water out.

i think the idea that an ignition must be sealed is incorrect, and probably why Husaberg have so many failures with trying to seal it.

i think we got the idea off a dealer either here at UHE or one local to me. can't remember.

anyway, thing is, for water to get in it has to rise up through the hole. and where is the air going to escape too? i have a shepherd's crook in the wiring and i silicon the cover on. so any water ingression is really slow.

in the meantime any moisture in the ignition evaporates and everything stays BONE dry.

it doesn't get any better!

i live in england and have had the same SEM ignition for 4 years. enough said i feel.

regards

Taffy
