Can someone please settle a difference of opinions re time to do the first oil change for 2011 model FE 450. Just wondering how many km's/hours people are clocking up before the first oil dump.

Secondly, some are quoting 10 hour intervals after the first oil change and also changing the filter at every oil change, others claiming the filter change every alternate oil dump.

Anyone got some info that can clarify this ongoing issue, especially in relation to when to do the first oil change.

(Unfortunately, I have not got access to the manual at the moment)

Many thanks.

Sutto's in Sydney said to bring my bike back at 3hr for the first oil change and service.
I change the oil and oil filter about every 3hours since. Don't know if that is good or bad it's just what I do.
I am on the Motorex Cross Power 4T fully Synthetic 10W/50
Davo.

Thanks guys. With my 570 I did first change after about 1.5 hrs (160km's). Mate has done about an hour on his new 450 and is prepping bike for big 4 day ride coming up. Think I'll suggest dropping oil now, rather than worrying about it during the ride.

Thanks again.

BB.

The schedule in the manual is:

Oil & filter after 1st hour, then again at 3 hrs, then every 15hrs or after every race. I use my 570 purely for leisure/trail riding and change at 10-15hrs depending on riding conditions. Dry and very dusty conditiions necessitate a shorter change interval. The service manual also indicates a change of piston at 45hrs for race and 90hrs for 'hobby' use but I'll be basing my decision on when to re-piston on how the bike is running/performing and if and how much oil it is burning.

Is the Oil Filter for the 2010 FX 450 shared with any KTM models so they can be found in our area? Orlando has no Berg dealers yet; we have two KTM dealers. Also, Motorex oil is scarce in these parts. Anyone having luck with more readily available products? For our heat here in FLA, does anyone suggest other products other than the 10W50?

The manual said to do the first oil change after 1 hr and the next at 3 hrs. I had 3 hrs after my first ride, so I missed the 1 hr change. I was surprised at how dirty and black the oil was at 3 hrs and how many metal filings were on the magnet.

Just this weekend I did my second oil change at 9.8 hours. The oil was much cleaner and only a few metal filings. I plan on going to the 15 hr plan now.

I also plan on changing my coolant now. If the oil was that bad perhaps the coolant is dirty too.

Note also that the first valve adjustment is scheduled for the three hour mark.

I have an FE570 and AFAIK the 450 has the same filter but check this with a dealer. The oil filter 'kit' for the HB is pn 0006000061 and comprises filter, mesh screen and O rings. The pn on the actual paper filter element in the kit is 77038005000 which is the same as the KTM 250exc from '06>. The filter kit is almost twice the price of the filter on it's own so I'm buying just the filters and washing/re-using the mesh screens. Interestingly, when I ordered some filters the parts guy said the KTM part had been superceded by pn 77038005044 and that's what it said on the filter packaging when they arrived but on the actual filter body was the old pn 77038005000! Note that the filter is NOT the same as the 1st stage filter fitted to some of the older KTM's that used 2 element filtration, even though they are exactly the same size & bore and will fit.

I've just filled with Shell Helix Ultra 15/50 which was a little over 1/3 of the price of the Motorex stuff.

While I see in the manual that it is due at 3 hours, no specifications or procedure is given. When I called our local KTM dealer, he acted disinterested at best in handling a Berg. Any suggestions on technical information as to how to perform this and other more technical requirements of the break-in period?

By the way, all of the information on the filters and oil was used today. Thank you all for then help. I went with Amsoil and the KTM filters as indicated here.

Odd. My owners manual has pretty decent instructions on changing the oil and cleaning various screens and filters.

If it isn't in your owners manual, you ought to buy the service CD. It is only around $25.

I shifted from the first oil change on to the valve adjustment specifications which is required at 3 hrs. There is not much on that in the manual that I can see.

I don't know if any of you have tried it but Amsoil 20/50 fully synthetic works really well, I have been using for years in my KTM's and now in my FE570. You can buy it directly from them online and at $11.95 a quart it is cheaper than almost all of the other synthetic oils.

Roger that.

I haven't yet checked the valves, but I hope the instructions are in the repair CD.

I changed the oil in my 2010 FX450 after the first hour and it was pretty dirty plugging up the oil screen pretty good. then changed again at 4 hours and it was significantly better still a little dirty and now i'm sure it will only need it every 15 hours or so or after a race :p

Most important to get new oil in the first 1-3 hours, but if the bike runs good there is not much point doing the valves.
Mine were within specs after 60 hours and that is typical with these bikes.
Keep that air filter clean!

Just changed the oil with 1.6 hours, screens very clean, magnet the same and oil looked good. Will change again around 4 hours.

I ran my bike in for the full 12 hours, and did 6 oil changes in that time, my bike 09 450 has around 130 hours and the valves haven't moved, so change the oil regularly and you should be fine :D
