Well, looks like my '05 FE650e is faster than I originally thought. My brother had bought an 04 KTM EXC 525 just last summer and had been after me to buy another dirt bike so I could ride with him and his son. Told him I didn't want another 500cc 4-stroke dog (like our old Honda RVFC's!) He didn't think that was funny and said his 525 was plenty fast enough....far faster, lighter and much better handling than the Honda's (and he's right too).

Well, fast forward to Janurary 05. I still wanted a bigger engine, so after a lot of research, I opted for the FE650 (which I got at Z-Racing in Anaheim, CA for a REAL good price too), to which my bro said it would be NO faster than his 525, and maybe slower and heavier.

Well, guess what...just to make sure he didn't look TOO bad, he tried to sneek a 610cc kit into his ktoom without my knowledge.....but one of the guys that did all the case work for the bigger bore let the cat outa the bag unknowingly on one phone call I had made, so my bro had no idea I knew! And....as it turned out, my FE was a few pounds lighter than his "525". Needless to say, he wanted to make absolutely damm sure (had to spell it that way) he was one up on me!

Now fast forward to the weekend before last where we both had just put on 140/80-18 Teraflex MONSTER tires for the ABSOLUTE in traction (they definitely ARE too!) and went up to Jawbone where we could wind these turds out. Also, my bro snuck in a 50 tooth rear sprocket where I still had my stock 45 tooth unit!!! 8O 8O 8O

Ok, sooooo....after riding on trails all day, we finally ended up on this long straight where we can both grab WOT side by side and guess what.....YEP, my FE pulls his 610 ktoom every time we try, and at a solid walking pace too!!! On the third try, he cheats and takes off early, but my FE is rapidly closing the gap, so what does he do....he shuts down BEFORE I catch him, but doesn't dare try to claim he won. And now he won't race me anymore!!!

So, I told him that he shouldn't feel too bad because his bike wasn't all that far off my FE650 with "just" 525cc's....to which he starts to choke a little under his breath. He even tried to say he ran out of gear because of his taller 50 tooth rear sprocket, but I quickly reminded him that neither of us even got past 5th gear....and that his gearing should still have given HIM the edge on acceleration anyway.

I then told him I knew he had just spent $3k+ on all his mods and what did it get him? Yep, it got him a $11K+ BUILT KTM that is SLOWER than my STOCK $8k Berg!!! Weeeelll, he definitely choked on that one, and he's not so happy now. On top of all this, his KTM overheats sometimes because his 2-piece rad has moderately less frontal area than the 1-piece Berg rad (but we still need a fan of some kind though). He's even tried larger aftermarket rads with no change in the overheating problems (they are thicker, but the frontal area is nearly the same....which is THE most important aspect of a good rad anyway).

So now he finally sees the folly of all his work and all that hard spent $$$, but it's too late....so, word to the wise, just sell the KTM and buy the DAMM BERG!!!

Dear Rustie.

A splendid write up, and shows how importand it is to choose the right bike to start with.........

I have gone through exactly the same as you, riding with a guy on a ktm 525 (2004) overbored to 540CC wit akrapowitch full exhaust, (or whatever!) and the full ktm catalog, from A-Z.

My old stone-stock 2001 Husaberg 550 was dead even with him, until we hit top-end.
Then it was asta-la vista, honey, goddbye, fare thee well.....

I´ll say it again, Stone-Stock

Buy the right bike for you in the beginning, educate yourself how to set the bike up the right way for your conditions, and leave the after-market companies alone.
Hell, I just looked in the newest Racer X magazine and I wondered if I was a Harley-Davidson owner because of all the aftermarket hop-up / fashion advertisement.
Half of the ****...g magazine was advertisement!!!

last larf

i laughed my arse off when i read this story. really well written too.

Rustie: Last summer at a club ride I switched off bikes with my brother who is almost a pro woods rider. (my 02 fx470E) that was the last time for about an hour that I seen my bike. Later that night the cat was let out of the bag by a fellow rider (friend) THAT MY BIKE WAS BEATING THE PANTS OFF A TWO YEAR NEWER KTM525 EXC. On the way home my brother went a bit deep into the story. He said that the 525 couldn't beat or out handle my Berg in the woods or open area's! that was a proud day for me :)

My 02 FE650 flat smoked two KX500's (the supposed king of the desert) down a fast two-track jeep road at one of the last races I rode with it. :D :D

I don't suppose the rider had anything to do with that :D

AJT

poor buggers! knackered old machinery, no money, run wot ya brung, liquirice frames, ergonomics from neolithic man, uncontrollable power delivery, spongy forks, white knuckle disease, beaten by 'the force'.

heartless swine!!!!

regards

Taffy

Great story Rustie.

I'll bet your sneaky brother is currently looking into a nitrous system!

logjump,
Ya know....with everything he's already done, I wouldn't put it past him. BUT, where's he gonna put the damm thing??? 8O 8O 8O

When you have some video(s) of that FE650E, let me know. I sure would like to hear, and see it diggin some trenches........;)

Me and my stepbrother were practicing starts tonight, in preparation for tomorrows race. Well the ole FE650, could consistantly pull his KTM 250mxc in a short drag to third gear it was only by a bike length or so. But I figured the two-smoke would rev quicker and might pull it.

I'm pretty sure rider was a big part of my 470 glory. The group he ride with, I'll put it this way "Birds of a feather" them fast guy's are flocking to gather! There's not a slouch in the bunch, except me

Keep an eye out for a new button, and check to see that he didn't carve out the bottom of his seat.....

Glad to hear such a good story!!!!! My next bike will be a Berg!!!! And might have to try that tire too... I Had to get a Snowmobile this year..... My trick LC4 will have to do for now since I bought it before I knew the way of the Berg.... Just wondering how the Berg's are Dual Sported... and what should be done to ensure longevity??

great story.
there no replacement for displacement!
i have an 02 fe650e and love it
i would buy a 800cc model if they made it.
i switched from stock gearing 15/42 to 14/42 at the
moab ride [thanks to fryguy] and the bike got even quicker.
i dont know if i lost any top end because i have never
ran out of motor in 6th gear. sort of ran out of b#lls at that spped, they get sucked up into my body for protection i suspect.
fryguy took my 650 for a spin one day at moab and seemed 'excited' about the power it had. maybe he will further comment on that.
maybe he will also comment on the ride when he waited with me for my hand to 'unfreeze' so i could ride again [thanks].....we missed the proper turn off and blasted on some open stuff and i think the 650 was able to pull away pretty nicely....or perhaps he was just letting me think i was going fast.
anyhow, i hear you my big bore brother.
tuts
ps.....maybe your bud shut down early since he knew you were going to blow by him and then he would be destoyed by the rocks shooting at him in your wake?

People have the misconception that a 650 is too much. The ability to out accelerate just about any dirt bike and still be smooth in first gear woods riding doesnt sound like too much to me. My 650 has the worlds best power delivery. Lately though i have been tempted by a new 550. Will I be disappointed with power? I have heard the550 is almost as powerful as a 650 and is reliable as 501. I bet the 550 doesnt quite have the low end of the 650.

cool write up husabergs r without doubt the most powerful i do enduros on my (96) fe600e and although it's the biggest CC bike in most the enduros i do and quite old i still make the ktm 525s look weak and they r a great bike with plenty of power touch the throttle on my berg in any gear and she just goes bonkers all the other guys comment on the performance of it never ridden a 650 but i guess it's pretty fast and very torquey oh i forgot to say these other bikes r much later than my (96) model cool
