Hi what gearing do you think I should start with for a '07 FE650 for a top speed of around 170-180 kmh in desert racing with not too much heavy sand

WOW you must have some serious ground to cover. I pinned the 650 in baja and got 108mph, maybe could of sqeaked another mile or 2 but i didn't have the nerve, and i was on pavement. 16/48
cheeseberger

yeah we have up to 850km per day to cover with up to 650km of that being Specisl Stages ie competative timing a la the Dakar

Wow. That's a lot of ground at some serious speeds! What's the distance between fuel stops? I know you've made inquiries and comments on tanks and fuel capacity, but I think I understand your perspective a bit more.

BTW, good luck, and give 'em hell!

This year it is 250km between fuel stops, so I need about 25 - 27 litres.

They have reduced it down from 300km which it was a couple of years ago so thats better.

I should be able to do it with

1) New Clarke main tank 12.9 litres
2) Right side panel tank 5.5 litres
3) underseat tank 3 litres
4) Nomad bumtank 5.8 litres

Total of 27.2 litres which are fairly well spread over the bike for pretty good weight distribution

hi, my standard 06 fe 650 will do 180klm with still more to go but i ran out of balls

what sprockets is that 16/45 ??

I have had my fe 650 up to 170 with 15/48gearing on road, she was still building speed but i lost control of my bowels. THIS IS INCREDIBLE FOR A STANDARD DIRT BIKE.

Gazza,
Ask the dealer very nicely for one of the 38 tooth rears thst he has out the back that came with the bike for passing the ADR drive by test. With a 15 on the front that should be good for about 210km/h !

Last week doing a Sunday ride, me and my friend (one FE and one FS 650), we started passing cars and kept going.... When we stopped for a break the speedometer showed 209 km/h as max speed reached! Gearing is 15/40.
