i have this 96 fe600 and have tried all i can to stop an oil leak from the o-ring around the starter motor.
oil pores out when i rev the bike. i have replace the oring tried 3bond, silicon gasket etc and it still leaks.
i love this bike and it runs great except for the fact i have to top it up with oil every time i ride. not to mention it is covering my boots with oil splatter. any help would great

welcome to UHE fella. try not to use capitals as begging and pleading leaves people pissed. just say what your problem is without the melodramatics please? ok?

now just mosey on down to the hard ware store with your O ring and ask for a thicker section one. same ID just a larger OD.

regards

Taffy

will give that a go cheers
is their a crank case vent that i dont know about on this bike?? there seems to be quite abit of pressure built up in there

which vents do you know about?
and do they move much air when bike is running?
no modified catch bottle or simalar? i.e. no retrictions in venting?
what about blowby? (rings still sealing ok?)

i totaly stripped the bike today after giving it a good clean. ripped the motor out and went over it with a fine tooth comb.
i could not see any form of crank case vent or any for that matter other than the carby vents. i then dropped the oil and ganged the starter motor off along with the clutch side of the case (just for inspection) and the rocker cover.
After giving the block a good flush with gas and getting it all nice and clean i found that i needed to shim the clutch so i did that. oh i also flushed the cooling side of it too with (was amased at the amount of scale in there).

off to the hardware i went with the old o-ring from the starter. after trying a few different places i ended up with 3 oversized o-rings.

after getting back i did the valve clearances etc and re installed the motor to the bike leaving the starter off.
i slipped the first o-ring into its original place and installed the starter flushed the motor again with crappy brand new oil (cheep stuff) and refilled the coolant and oil will good stuff and kicked it over. Still leaking!!!!! not as much instaid of Niagra falls i have Niagra drip :) so hmmmmmm *scratches head* out with the starter i slipped the extra 2 o-rings into the hole and then pushed the starter in again (see the bad pic- the solid black bits are the o-rings :p ). kicked it over and it seems to be working its abit rough i know bit i am at my wits end with this thing. i took it out and gave it an absoute thrashing and for the first time in ages no oil puddle under the thing and my boots are dry YAY
my next idea is to get a core plug and remove the starter altogether and justr hammer it in there.

burgbro there is no modified catch bottle no venting and there is no blowby i have justr had 5 thou removed from the head and new piston rings etc i never use the e-starter as the clutch in it is busted and i dont think it could handle the compression that it has with the mods anyways

Hey buddy, there has to be some form of venting, my 650 has two vents on the top of the rocker cover (but are still crankcase vents), coz with no venting you will build up excess crankcase pressure which will then find the next weakest exit point. be it a gasket, o ring, seal or ungasketed joint.
I thort u may have had a blocked breather.
You gotta wonder why it took three oversize orings to stem the flow!

In this image of my 97 600 the breather spigot is the one with the hose clamp to the left of the exhaust valve cover.

Is it possible that someone unscrewed the spigot and replaced it with a bolt?
