Hi Guys,

Out for the first ride on my '11 FE570 today, was a lot of fun. Rode through a lot of mud and snow - really slippery, sticky mud.

On the way back to the truck I heard some awful crunching, slowed down to see what it was then the back wheel locked up - thankfully I was at walking speed by this time.

Turns out that small stones that were being picked up by the rear wheel were getting through into the chain and running up to the front sprocket under the chain. This is what eventually locked the back wheel up, a small stone between the front sprocket and chain. There was a heap of mud around the chain and guides.

Has anyone ever had this problem before? I am not that keen on the whole open front sprocket setup - is there a good after market cover for the front sprocket?

Cheers.

Chain and sprockets (despite what they look like in the pic) are brand new - less than 50km's on them and adjusted properly :)

I had the same thing happening to me but without mud. I was going up a big hill of loose big gravel and the bike digged itself down until it all stopped due to rocks locking up the drivetrain. My rekluse saved the bike.

I like it open. If it would be closed there would probably be much higher risk of getting rocks and twigs stuck, and much more difficult to get them out. All I had to do was to remove the chain and then the rocks.

It's that dam Calgary mud :) I went through the mud crud ride from hell last weekend lol. I back my chain off a little in these conditions. Was told this about 20 years ago and tried it, don't know if it is actually BS but havnt picked up and held a stray rock since. It seems to allow the chain to clear better?
