Thought you would find it interesting. I am going to start a thread in 'Mechanical' to discuss the idea of using the frame as an additional sump for oil as the article shows.


I wonder if the paint inside the frame eventually comes off and goes through the engine? I wonder if an aluminium transmission cooler would be a better option? Just a thought :?
Great article. Very timely as my mates are trying to talk me into a 4,000 ~ 5,000Km trek from Sydney to Broome. They want to buy KLR650's

I doubt there is any paint inside the frame. Maybe some rust if there was moisture inside when the frame was welded together. Maybe leftovers from the manufacturing process (metal shavings, bits from welding), but I don't know of anybody who paints the inside of a frame - unless there are openings and they dip it (usually that isn't the case). I doubt there would be problems, but if there were the filters would pick up any debris.

A lot of motorcycles over the years have used the frame as an oil reservoir. The last one I owned was a Suzuki DR350 - the frame was *the* oil reservoir. It held almost 2 liters IIRC. There is a lot of surface area there for cooling - not near as much as a finned radiator type cooler, but some. Then there is also the increased capacity.

The guy who wrote the article said on AdvRider that he has a kit for this. If people want to send him a frame he will mod it for them (for some price I am sure). I would buy a reasonably priced kit.

OK, having a closer look it seems that the oil runs from the frame and then straight to the oil filter, so you are correct it wouldn't matter what was in the frame the filter would pick it up.
 
I'd be interested in the kit, I can do the fab work myself.
Have you any contact details?
 
Some clever ideas there for those inclined. I like the tool storage around the bash plate area, nice a low with the weight too !

only surprise is that he does seem to have done anything with the subframe.

afterall he's made his swingarm into a water container you'd have thought he'd have dones something with the sub-frame.
 
He plumbed the subframe as a fuel tank. He basically has 4 fuel tanks, normal, subframe, front and rear safari tank.

Hi all, I'm From Oregon and I'm shopping for an Enduro and it's come down to the KTM 530 or 450 and the Fe 570s. So, my question is, is the Berg a better buy in the long run? I'm 45 6'2" 215lbs I ride 70% single track and 30% street. my last bike was a KTM 625sxc, it was a pretty good bike but the weight(offroad) and the vibration on the street really sucked. I'm leaning towards the berg but the KTM's are high on the list..THoughts..Thanks all, I'm new here and I hope hope everyone has a scream'n St. Patty's day! :cheers:
 
They're all good bikes... I have a 2010 FE450 myself. If everything else is equal then for me it would come down to fuel capacity. I know I'm probably going to get flamed here. But, the KTM's have a better "big tank" option. I speak from experience. I have a 70 degree subframe tank and the Safari "front" tank. It's a bit over 5 gallons of fuel when they're all full. The plumbing involved with this is not "confidence inspiring" and the Safari tank is... well, it's a nice piece of work, but with it you have 2 petcocks that are Quite exposed and the joint at the top of the tank doesn't seal properly with the stock tank, making for a LOT of fuel leaking.
While the KTM gives you the option of 1 big tank and much simpler plumbing.
In Baja, or some long distance "adventure" ride, simple is ALWAYS better.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you, that's a big concern, I was thinking if I go with the Berg it won't leave the shop untill the sub-tank is installed. i do alot of hare-scramble, 50-70 mile loops on single tracks with the bro's.. 5 gallons is pretty extreme for my type of rides, it would be nice but the weight up top would take away the balance and performance level I'm used to...I do like the option KTM has when it comes to long distance tanks but I don't for see myself needing more than about 80 to 100 miles of fuel. Would the sub-tank get me to the 100 mile mark being a very agressive rider? Thanks... :cheers:
 
It's pretty close... When I'm doing an enduro or hare scramble, I think I get right around 90 miles out of my stock tank/subframe combo. I'm in Northern Ca. riding some pretty tight single track, but I do get to 3rd gear quite a bit.

If you don't care about a big-*** tank, then the 'Berg is the way to go. There's too damn many orange bikes out there already! :D

Ok, Im going with the 2011 Berg 570s. Changing the the rear tail light to the Off road style FE and doing flush mount blinkers, sub-frame tank, RAD Fan, Grip heaters, disk cover, Map switch, swiv pegs, bark busters and steering damp...Do the gears after the first month of break in... anything else? Single track 70%, 30% road and hare scramble 3 times a year..Stoked! :cheers:

I think it would get you there. Usable fuel is about 3.3 gallons or more, but everybody's fuel mileage varies of course.
 
Thanks CM, That's plenty of fuel aslong as I can get a 100 miles even if I have to nurse it back a few miles haha.
The Sub-frame Tank is a must because piece of mind makes the ride that much better..
 
I get 100 miles till my reserve light kicks in on my FE570 with a 70 degree tank and 120 miles to emtpy
