Hi im needing a new chain for an FE501 2003 model.
Ive counted the links to be 57 plates on the outside including 2 split links (YES 2!!) Ive never quite got to grips with how to count a chain so what length should it be running? It has a 48 rear and either a 15 or 16 front I have both and was trying which i prefered.

Cheers Pete

On my fe550, I ran 15/45 which is the same as 16/48. It has a rekluse clutch so it never felt too tall for slow stuff.

I never maxed it out, but I'm sure it would do 90-100mph with that gearing.
Good for 70-75mph in 6th, right in the meat of the power, and not revved too much.
15/48 might be a better choice depending on how slow you need to go.

57 outer links means 57 inners = 114 links which sounds about right. If your chain is knackered that 114 may be worn to nearly as long as a new chain of 116 links so keep that in mind.

I just buy a 120 link and cut/break it the right length.
