fe501 cam chain

I am looking at buying a 1999 fe501 which has a snapped cam chain , is there likely to be valve and / or piston damage ???? and what would cause the cam chain to snap in the first place , I know the cam chains on these arnt very good so would it have snapped just through being a weak part ???? any advice would be great

Open the engine and check the valves, bought a -99 501 with the same problem, changed the camchain and after few hours one valve got broken with a total rebuild of the engine.
Thats not an cheap affair to rebuild an 501 ;-)
