I am going to replace my XR400 this year, hopefully soon. I like that bike but want something a little bigger and to do weekend trips on. Considering a FE570. How well are these on trips, around 250 miles of two lane roads. I was also considering a KTM 500 but I think the FE would be better.

You will need a better seat and spoke weights for your tires .. gutz racing seat vs seatconcepts seat you will be fine..

Fuel capacity will be an issue if you take trips as lengthy as you say. The tank on the 570 only holds 2.1 gallons. There are a vairety of ways to address this, but the cheapest is to carry extra fuel in a backpack or tail pack in the heavy MSR (Mountain Science Research) dromedary water bladder or in aluminum fuel bottles typically used for mountain stoves.

How about duribility? How dependable are these? How many hours-miles between oil changes? I mainly ride off road so I want the option for longer weekend trips.

Compared to your XR you'll probably find them quite maintenance intensive. The 'problem' is the engines only hold a relatively small amount of oil so it gets worked hard and degrades quicker.I guess everyone has their own ideas on oil/filter changes but I stick to 15hrs. I'm sure I've read somewhere about a mod to use the frame tubes to hold more oil and greatly increase total oil capacity so you can safely go further between changes.

I have over 100hrs on mine and it goes and sounds like it did at 2 hrs. Never burns any oil. Not counting the fuel pump issue the only problem I've had so far is with a rattly camchain so I 'fixed' it with a DJH manual tensioner.
You don't say wether you've actually ridden one yet but if you haven't, you're in for a treat. Lightyears ahead of your XR, IMO.

I change oil more than I should on the XR so I dont mind changing oil, I feel it is cheap insurance. The shop I go to has a demo and I will go and take it out. It is also for sale so I may look into that one.

Might as well bring your checkbook along then. You're gonna like it...

I switched from the XR to the KTM to the Husaberg FE 570. There is no comparison between the XR and Husaberg. The Husaberg is "Light Years" ahead of the XR. You're gonna love the Husaberg. Yeah, the maintenance is a little more intensive, but not all that complex. You will now have screens to clean when you do an oil change, you'll need shims to adjust the valves, the oil you use will always be a full synthetic, and you'll immediately want to install the Can Am filter in the fuel line to avoid injector issues. What you gain is a lot of power, tons better suspension, and brakes and handling that actually work. You'll love it. Add a 70 degree subframe tank and you'll be at I believe 3.3 Gallons on board. I added that to mine and have done 156 miles without running out. The low fuel light was on, but it made it home.

My KTM madde over 35,000 mile off road, and I expect this Husaberg should do the same with the proper maintenance.
