I was considering getting a brand new leftover '08 Fe550. It would be for the most part a dedicated snowbike with a 2 Moto kit. It would probably double as a dualsport in the summer.

I have heard that these bikes aren't as desirable for 2 reasons. They can have electrical problems and they rev very slowly. Any thoughts?

I don't know where you heard about the electrical problems or the slow rev, but it wasn't here. No such issues with an 08 550.
I know the 650 is preferred for a snow bike just because of the additional torque and hp.
The 08's are great bikes. If I had some extra coin I would buy one just for a spare.

Yes, what do you compare with?

There is not so often electrical issues with 2004-2008, any size. Just worn sparkplugs.
Slow revs, yes in 16/38 gearing its a bit slow, but you will reach above 200km/hr.

Just take care when you reach these speeds, its a bit unstable.

RE: Re: Fe 550

Whoever told you they have electical problems and rev slow doesn't have a clue. The electrical is dead simple and reliable. The 550 motor revs up plenty quick to any Jap 450 off-roader I've had. Sure it doesn't hit like an MX'er, but the 550 is so smooth as is, you can ride it over anything.

You mean like this?

I just finished this with Rick Bozarth's help. 2008 FE550e dual-sport.

BUY IT get the suspension sorted too suit your weight read the doco's in the suspension section, and if your concerned about the slow rev bit put a 50 tooth sprocket on the rear and hang on she'll do close too 160 kph and rip your arms off getting there and still handle the tight stuff, 550's i love mine , electrical is no problem had a bit of wire fatigue around the head stem bit off heatshrink will fix that apart from that all good you wont be dissapointed ..........colin
