Hi Guys,

I'm just about to start putting my '01 FE 501 back together after 18 months in various boxes, this did include 9 months waiting for parts 8O .

I want to upgrade to an FCR, my question is what size should I be looking for, will a 39mm be OK?

A 39mm will be Fine!
A41mm will be ok also, actually they are both just great :)
 
39 is spot on! you can bore it out if you want, probably for far less than the difference in price on ebay.
