Hi Guys,

You were great help recently so, hopefully you will be again,

Been running fine, nothing of concern.

Background, in top gear just before slipway ( I drop down motorway 1 junction, about 2mile) gas it a bit and it bogged down, so backed off continued fine, began to gas a little softer to build up, all ok.

As I approached slip road down, dropped a gear, revved quite high, when throttled again bogged out, again backed off, by which time I had to hit anchors and cycle straight down gears before lights, by which time engine had cut out completely and won't start.

Commence a 3mile up hill walk home, not a happy bunny

Got home, checked spark, fuel, been through decomp cycle, I'm getting an occasion bang or pop as though its fire the fuel in cylinder. nothing more. Can anyone help?

Check if you fuel pump is running .Just touch the starter button and you should hear the pump run for a couple of seconds ..it makes a whirring sound .....

change plug and plug cap first.this is most common problem also check battery terminals.

Changed spark plug, I have 3 of those keep rotating them.
My dad got a serious bolt of spark down his arm which did make him jump ! so can i assume plug & cap are ok?
Battery terminals - i will double check.

I have been kicking it for a while trying differant things assposed to reling on electrical start.

Hi chaps,
I've checked the points raised here, attery terminals are fine.
As is the boot surrounding the carb to both side the connection to rear of head and rubber boot to air filter.
The noise i'm getting is a sharp rasp as though its trying to fire up.
I'm going to check that the plug is sparking inside with a ht to spark plug tester.
Could the coil be at fault ? how bright should a spark be?
Also after getting this rasp a small amount of light grey smoke being to filter out from the exhaust and the uncovered air filter box.
Any suggestions greatly received.

I realize you checked the plug, but this sounds just like what I experienced a while ago. Did you ground the plug electrode on the engine or header and verify that you are getting arc across the electrode rather than somewhere else? The jolt your dad got may be because it jumped to him but doesn't mean the spark is across the electrode. I went through several plugs before I cured my problem. I installed a new plug and it died after a couple of hours (insulator cracked.)

Since you refer to kick starting it tells us this is a 04-08 model.
I would check for a valve issue,broken spring,cam bearing...
Check for metal on your drain plug

Hi Guys ,Thanks for the tips

the rubber boot connecting the carb to the motor is split behind the hose clamps!

Good call, ordered a new one it was perished but is not the problem, Thanks to TAFF's for the boot.

Tried a few other things, valves are moving un compression, spark plug is wet and sparking

Any more tips tricks would be extremely helpful...

get it over with and pull the top cam cover. inspect the valve springs (likely problem) and the cam bearings at each end of the cam. also inspect the rocker cam follower bearings. bet you find the problem there.

Had rocker covers and top head part off, all seems to be moving under compression, cam chain turning etc, but this getting way out of where i feel comfortable,
I've seen the very light grey smoke when kicked over is coming from the cam chain area does this mean anything?
it was still kicking over a pop on evert 5th ish kick, although it did pop while i had the decompression lever pulled in?

Did you look for a broken spring?

It could be broken right down next to the head and it is just dropping the valve enough to prevent starting. Check the valve lash?
