Hi I just bought a 05 fc 450 that came from New York and I am in Kentucky it pops when you let off the throttle while riding, im guessing its a little lean on the carb should I try the fuel air screw or install larger idle jet?

there is a misconception about the backfire. i have had a 48PJ in and it backfired non-stop and i've also had a 35 in ever since and i can't make it backfire at all.

please go into the doc, then to carburation and have a look at the recommended settings. the lineaweaver needle is slightly better than the DMS but it's a mess. the europeans are running 150MJ and the yanks are all on 170.

just do it your way and let us know how you go....

regards

A couple of other causes for backfiring or popping.

Leaks in the exhaust system connections.

Check to see what jetting is in the bike first so that you have a known starting point.

Dirty carb components. Since this is a used bike (?), it could be that the PJ is clogged. When you check your actual jetting, it might not be a bad idea to just pull the carb, take it apart and give a good cleaning with carb cleaner and compressed air. Remember to remove the slide as the plate on the engine side has a seal that can be destroyed by harsh cleaners. As well, be sure to not get carb cleaner on the float needle, choke plunger, AP diaphragm, or the little O ring on the fuel screw. They don't like carb cleaner much either.

When you pull the fuel screw make sure the little O ring above the spring is in good shape, not cracked etc....

The needle straght will also have an effect on the mix at closed throttle.

Where is your fuel screw at right now? The fuel screw can help with popping depending on where it's set.

Let us know how you get on.
