My engine has ever whistled a bit.
Two months ago i regenerated my engine with a brand new crackshaft, piston, main gear etc etc. When i took it back from the mechanic it whistled a bit more. while the berg was on without pulling the throttle up the exhaust sound was as loud as the engine whistle.

i asked my mechanic about this weird sound and he said that it's nothing to worry about. the sound is made by the poor-quality "conjunction" (really don't know how to translate it."mating" "pairing". i presume he was speaking about the gearbox)

Now i noticed that the whistle has changed a bit, it is louder, higher pitched and more metallic. this change happened after a week i hadn't ridden my berg and with the temp which has been decreased of about 8 celsius degrees.

should i worry?

yes!

i have heard this whistle before. it is always the same pitch and tone and only gets louder or quieter even at tickover.

this was the crank running the mains out on my freinds 450. eventually the crank snapped twice in exactly the same place on the left side of the bige ned.

through the drilled oil feed hole.

your english is good pasta tillo and i hope understood you here!

tell me more of what you did to the engine?

regards

Taffy

i had a whistle on my cobbahs GIXXER 1000 ... could'nt figure it out .. turned out to be the fuel pump signing off .

WTFF?!?!?!?!

taffy, are you talking about the main bearings?
the crank snapped into twice? i regenerated my engine 300 miles ago 8O :2gunfire: :forcefeed: :smoker:

The most likely situation is that you have new gears that don't mate properly - possibly your mechanic has used the wrong one from a different year. Check exactly which gears were swapped out during the rebuild. Then check for something more serious.

All the best,
Simon

twice last week i named it and i was on the money!

all we know is the result of my mates engine.

the result was a toasted main and balancer as well as a snapeed crank twice in the same place. left side of big end oin through the oil drilling. the crank was under terrible pressure somewhere but as it wasn't my engine i couldn't say for 100%.

pasta - you have been warned sir!

Taffy

i'll ask him to talk to you personally on a one-to-one how about that?

shheet, i might even get him to fly down to italy and tell you personally!

his name here is "cranksnapper" but i think he has yet to post.

regards

Taffy

i had a look at the spare parts manual. i noticed that the main gear is the same from 03, but the BALANCER SHAFT is a new part of 06 and i think he used an old balancer shaft taken from a rigo's engine.

do you know if the balancer shaft is different between 06 years and earlier version? maybe this is the problem?

taffy after 1000miles no case snapping..engine still whistle, not more, not less (maybe a little bit less)

mmh the sound in that video is lower, it's more like a "TAK TAKTAK".
mine is much higher and it's really like a whistle.

it's a bit higher than this one and plays at any revs

Pastullo, this is my bike
Its made the noise your on about since i bought it 6 months ago. Ive noticed that the bash plate amplifies it alot.
Its anoying and at times its ear piercing.
But im still running without problems.

All, I've had this exact same problem with my 02 FS650E. Firstly, I had an oil leak through my kick start shaft casing o-ring, which resulted in the engine blowing. I had new crank shaft, balacer shaft, big end, piston etc, and when I got the bike back I had this high pitch "screetching" noise to accompany the usual deep blurp. I was assured that it was the new engine parts that just needed to bed in. Anyway, 3 months & several oil changes later, it was still there.

I'm told that the reason is down to very slight differences in machining tolerances for mating parts ("KTM versus Husaberg was quoted"??, 02 versus different years etc). I waited several months for old parts to come in, but gave up in the end & got a different Hussa. If your not at all self conscious, I was told nothing serious will occurr, otherwise I suggest you consider changing unless you want heads to turn for all the wrong reasons.... :)

As I said before guys, the sound is indicative of improperly mating gears. Most usually it is caused by the e-start sprague gears when they've been changed or they can be from others such as the counter-balancer gear if the weight has been swapped out for any reason. This happens because there were changes to the gears between some years and the part numbers aren't always on the spare part so mix ups happen in the shop.

This is not something that is resolved by bedding in.

Eventually, I think the problem will cause premature failure of something so it is worth taking your time to check it out.

Cheers,
Simon

I have now the same sound taffy talkes about. I have done almost everything to get rid of this "gear" sound. Changed main bearings, balancer, waterpump bearing, new camchain, clutch and kickstarter bearings. I also started the bike without the kickstarter and e-starter gears...no change in sound.
Someone talkes about the gears..but my sound comes from front left side and I think it´s somehow connected to the two gears running with the clutch.
Have I received bad main bearings or should I replace the whole crank..??
Looks like some have the sound and keep riding the bike with no worries..?
My bike sounds like the one on this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlcfJ-jAvzE

When you first look at the video it dosen´t sound that bad, but you can hear the hard metallic sound from the engine.

Mine is by the way a Husa 450 2006

I'm not sure if that sounds abnormal, I'm struggling to pick up anything like I had (mine literally screeched, as one friend described it "two bikes in one", with the sound of a Japanese 4 at top revs, and the single cylinder Berg... very nasty & very noticeable). However.... that said there may be varying degrees of meshing. BTW, mine also seemed to be predominantly on the left.

Any other views chaps?
