Check my gallery. Made from bits scrounged off the short ends rack. Any questions just ask.

I took some snaps and added them as the original one doesn't show much detail. You will notice a spacer added to the bottom tie as the engine surfaces are offset. Also the studs that anchor the engine case have collets on them that expand when the studs are tightened. I am very pleased with how the stand works, too bad the engine doesn't.

Which reminds me to post up more details on the bore scratching saga now that I have everything apart again.

hi neil

well built and although you say "thrown together from bits" i think not! beautiful peice of work though.

i've a photo which i can send to anyone who'll host it, it's simply 2 pieces of steel. the first is an inverted 'F' and the second - for the front is an inverted 'F' but with 3 prongs and not the two.

i'm thinking of making one that hasn't got the 90d corner but more like 70d so that from standing upright it can lay back.

what i wanted to ask you neil is this:

you want to hold the left case flat and fit the guts followed by the right case. then you want to fit the flywheel, gearbox sprocket, oil filter.

next you want to work in the left cover. well with the system i thought of you simply pull out a leg at a time and replace around the other side of the engine, lay it on it's back and off you go. that leaves the head upright or again laying on it's right.

i could do with 2 or 3 of them.

I looked at the factory job in the repair manual to get an idea of what was needed. I wanted mine to stay clamped into the left case for the whole job. I just swing it whichever way I need and can put it at any angle, unlike the factory one that has detents. When it comes time to torque the crank nut, I use a couple of heavy C-clamps to anchor the stand to the workbench.

Just like you say, load everything into the left case, then put the right case on. Swing it as needed for the external bits.

take a look at swedishsteel gallery too, very useful stand. I made few of them, one narrower, good to work on cyl.heads, porting, valve jobs etc.
