after a few hours of riding...not real hard....there seems to be a lot of noise coming from the engine...i have had the valves adjusted and change the oil every time out...almost sounds like a chain loose...i have a 03 501 fe and love the bike but dont want to ruin in ...anyone have any idea what the problem is...or if i should worry about it...it seems the motor is awful noisy to me...

Hi,

from my experiences nothing surprising for a ´03.

check your camchain tensioner. Have a look in which position the notch is.
First take out the screw in the middle with the spring, then the 2 others and take out the whole tensioner.
There is a chance of 99% that notch´s already in last position.
That´s the reason why the chain is too loose and make these noises.
You have to buy a new camchain. Tip: Take the regina chain.

They all sound noisy to me. As long as there is no excessive metal in the oil I dont tend to worry about it. If you run a skid plate it really seems to amplify the engine noise. It probably would not be a bad idea to check the cam chain and tensioner though.

As hribman says but also the 03s had a habit of self loosening the nut on the counterbalancer/camchain drive shaft - this produces a similar sound.

Check this and re-tighten with generous amounts of thread lock.

Cheers,
Simon

thanks much for the input...i will be looking at this over the weekend with hopes of getting out on sunday
