Fellow Husabergers !

Someone has probably already asked this question, but here goes: How many hours do you have/did you have on your machines before the first rebuild?

I road-registered my 2007 FS650e here in Hong Kong in May last year and have done 150.8 hours with no grief yet. I don't use it as my daily commuter, except occasionally (35 km commute, mostly higway at about 100 kph, varying the speed a lot, keeping her in the sweet powerband) but have still managed to rack up that many hours and around 7.000 km. Don't forget, HKG, from end to end, is only roughly 120 km...you could do it all in one day. Easily.

Oil changes every 10 hours, valve adjustments when hard starting, or stalling at idle. Filter change every time and only very little fine black dust on the drain plug. I never rev her too hard and only wheelie...ahem...a couple of times per ride. Per Thomas Enginehardware's instructions, checked the cam chain tensioner and it is absolutely in the middle, 7 notches out of 15.

And yes, Thomas Enginehardware, I WILL send my engine for you to rebuild. Soon.

Greetings from a hot and sticky Hong Kong !

Ingemar

Most will say that the magnetic drain plug is a good indicator as to what's going on within the engine, you say yours has been nothing but good for 150 hours so should say your internals are sound. A new cam chain would probably be a good idea, although you say you have plenty of adjustment left so it's up to you, £35 for a chain is money well spent. I stripped mine down at 110 hours due to head gasket blown, everything was fine inside including the cam chain but I replaced it anyway along with the rings. Cam follower bearings are prone to collapse but that's mainly due to incorrect/infrequent valve adjustment, sounds like your on top of that.
I would suggest your not riding it hard enough, something serious should have happened by now! lol
Carry on doing what your doing and keep an eye on the magnet. Nice Duke too.

Regards Freaky

Thanks Freaky. Yeah, I know I ride it like ALOL, but HKG does not lend itself to extravaganza! Heck, I can get banned for using WOT in first on the Duke over here ! Still, keeps the Porkers and Ferkers at bay...on Sunday mornings.

Also, my Dr. Berg is a 2007, by which time the Austrian assembly Santa's might have gotten a few things right. Only took the the better part of a decade ! Never mind.

Thanks for your input. Since it is few and far between any dealers over here, let alone anyone who knows Husas inside-out, I will keep it going for a few more hours, before I hand-carry the engine back to Sweden for an overhaul.

My two cents worth............

You are waiting too long to do your valve adjustments. If it stalls at idle, and is hard starting, that means the intake valves are leaking, not good, do them sooner.

Pull the rocker box off and check the cam followers on the rocker arms. It's an afternoon job and could save you a lot in the long run. In my humble opinion you should replace the rocker arms and cam followers as a preventative measure at the number of hours you have on it. I waited too long, 180 hours, and the exhaust side had started to fail and the hardened bits that came out got on the cam lobe face of the intake side and caused the intake follower to intermittently skid causing damage to the hard facing of the cam. Luckily the damage was not too severe and I was able to just clean it up and keep using it. Otherwise, just roll them with your finger and if you do not feel any gritty resistance or excessive play they are probably okay.

You say that you are doing oil changes at 10 hours. Is the oil coming out black? If it is you are waiting too long. If it's not then you're probably fine. When you change your oil, after all the oil has quit draining. Hold the kill switch down and pull the compression release in and with the bike vertical, kick it through briskly 15 or 20 times. Kick it, don't just use the electric start. This will remove the remaining oil that is under the crank and trapped behind the reed valve. You'll be surprised at how much more oil comes out after you do this.

FWIW I check valves every 15 hours, exhausts need adjusting bout every 30 - 40 hours intakes every 40 - 60, I use 0.14 mm and carb breather filters.

delo400 with 8 - 10% moreys changed every 3-4 hours, its blackish after 30 min :D IMO the most important oil on a bike is in the air filter, belray or motul.

my CFBs are still fine with 200 hrs as is the big end, rings were fine at 170hrs but I put new ones in they took 15 hrs to get as little blow by as the old ones.

lots of guys get 300 hrs no problems and Ive seen posts on here with 33 000Km + and no big issues.

I broke my gearbox at 170hrs, from what I saw of the rest of the engine 300 - 400 hours would have been about right for a rebuild.

Thanks or the input, Guys.

Wow ! Seems that longevity and opinions vary as much as the mileage.

Just to answer, the oil (Motorex, per OEM specs) is not really black after 10 hours. Also, I do same as Bushie and go slightly loose when adjusting the valves. I tend to do that say every second oil-change. Most of the time, there is no real adjustment needed.

When changing the oil, I tilt the bike to its right side. There is quite a lot of oil that drains out when doing that.

Anyway, as I mentioned, I plan to have the engine rebuilt sometime this autumn.

Thanks again, lads.

Good tip with the complete oil drain technique Dale. I'm gunna do that from now on. Popup runs the Morey's too like Bushmechanic & swears by it. All good info, cheers.

Dale when i race it do max 20/30 mins on the bike for the day, then change the oil. Mine still comes out black! Most Ive left an oil change is 1 hour, still black.

Good tip with the complete oil drain technique

before starting up the bike after an oil change particulary if doing the filter as well I hold the kill switch down and do the same to get some fresh oil up to the important bits

have done a test running delo without the moreys for winter, clucth action went downhill and got more than the usual ammount of metal on the drainplug. it is good stuff that moreys.

For what it's worth;

My first rebuild was at about 100 hr's, new piston and cam followers.

Now I'm doing a complete overhaul at 330 hr's and I found this;
Cylinder is oval and needs replacement, of course also the piston.
Main bearings, big end, and balancer... just in time. (Balancer was hitting the piston)
Valves are tuliped (Yes I'm from Holland...)
Camshaft worn.
Carb worn.
Replacement of most of the other bearings.

The gearbox seems to be like new... no wear at all.

This seems to be a lot but after this quantity of off-road and rally hours, I assume it's not to bad.
