hi guys, a bit of help please if you can...

i have a 501 supermoto which i have just had rebuilt to a good spec. i got the bike back not set up and have given the bike to a more local guy with a dyno so he can jet it and set it up for me. i phoned him on friday for an update and he said he'd done the jetting and i was as good as a bike like this would ever get! 'but' he said... it seems to have an electrical fault as when it warms up, after about 20 mins or so, it just cuts out! no spluttering or anything! he said it's so sudden it's like turning the ignition off! give it 5 mins and it fires up again but only again for another 10 or so mins and it cuts out again!
does anyone know what this sounds like? i had a stator fail once before and i picked up a second hand one which is still on there now... but all the readings seem ok! could it be this or am i looking in the wrong direction?
any help would be good guys... have spent £3k recently and still not got a running bike!
HELP!!

Hi Ben,

Definitely sounds like a stator, had the same thing happen to me before.

I suggest you contact member Taffy on this site (Taffmeister 01353 723883 http://www.taffmeisters.co.uk/) as he has a few rebuilt stators on hand that are much better than how they are delivered new.

It is my understanding is what is happening is there is a broken wire in the winding somewhere, and as the winding heats up, the wires separate due to thermal dynamics of the wire, and poof no more ignition. Once it cools a bit the broken wire lays back down and you are back in business.

I'm betting that if you were to put a meter on the pulse windings right after the motor cuts out, you would get bad readings.

thanks for the help mate,
i still have my old stator somewhere from when i replaced it... is it possible to get this one rewound? i had my motocross stator rewound by a local company but i'm un sure whether they will do this one as it is set in resin! if they will take this on would someone be able to give me specs to get it rewound to?
thanks again

Ben, there's a gentleman on here who goes by "sparks" who can rewind your stator. I'll be sending him mine soon. He's located in Spain.

Check out Taff's web site. You send your old one to him and he sends you back a stator that has already been rewound. I have one of these rewound units in my 01 501 and she runs like a champ.

The resin is not a problem, although when you get it back you will see that the area where the resin had to be removed has be resealed with silicone or some other type of sealer. There is a picture of one on Taff's web site in one of the PDF files there listing the parts for sale.

Everyone that has gone to these stators that have been rewound, the ones Taffy sells anyway, have had a 100% success rate. IE not one failure since rewind.
