Went to an orgainised ride in the weekend and after being knocked off my bike once and dropping it on a corner. The battery had had it. The kick starter wouldn’t get any response so after checking, cleaning, deflodding . I tried crash starting, I suspect the battery was so low…no response. After a 2 hour push through bog and forest to the nearest out road, after lifting the bike over a fence. I am resolved never again go through this again.(Also the taunts from the green brigade as I came back to the start of â€Â

So let me take a shot here.
You dropped it in the corner and the bike went upside down (or close to it). The oil ran out of the crankcase through the breather hose and into the carb via the air box.
The battery was dead, probably because it's due for replacement (you should already have the YTZ7s in it already, make sure you replace it with the same).
So, you need to remove the airfilter and see if there is any oil in the airbox or in the rubber boot going to the carb. If so, wipe it out with a rag and drain the carb float bowl. Try to start it with some fresh fuel in the carb.

I only suggest this because the 07 450's seem to be somewhat bulletproof in the electrical department (strating /charging).
The doc is a great piece of work but mainly refers to pre 04 bikes.

Then again I may have my Kiwi to American translations all mesed up.
Let me know where I went wrong.

Sorry to hear about you mate.

Yea Berger, your right, the bike did go right over, with the breather facing directly down the slope.I found oil in the rubber boot one other time and mis-read it as oil filter oil coming down from the filter.I didn't think of oil from the breather going into the carb.I will investigate.I kept saying to my riding mate I should drain the carb bowl, he is usually pretty good with advice but he didn't get that one right.
I think the NZ berg dealer (a bit shady) swapped the YTZ7s for a YTX because the YTZ7s is pictured in the manual. I am relieved to hear about the starter and stator thats good news.
Yea condolences to any other NZ south Island riders who read the forum and know the deceased rider,we have not had a serious incident at our rides for a while. It was the toughest organised ride of the season. Wet ,twisting ,single trail, some steep up-hill sections through the forest with hundreds of eposed tree roots. The section the accident happened was fairly level and I am under the understanding speed was a factor.
cheers

In addition to what Berger said you must keep the battery plugged into a high tech charger such as the Optimate 3 or 4 at all times when the bike is not being ridden.

Your battery will be very short lived if the voltage is allowed to fizzle out between rides.

As far as electrics goes you shouldn't need to do anything else but get a new YTZ7S or equivalent and the charger.

If you do a breather mod you won't have the problem of oil filling your carb and cylinder in case of an over turn.

Thats excellent advice about the charger,I was wondering about the between ride effect on the battery. Also I will look up the doc on breather mods.
cheers Husabutt
