hey guys,
When I try to start my bike with the electric start, I usually end up killing the battery befor ethe bike starts. I have no problem kicking starting the bike. I am thinking maybe I will just remove the electric starter and battery and the tail light. The headlight has already been replaced with a number plate. The tail light doesn't work, so what the heck? What would the weight savings be to remove all that stuff?
A few interesting facts about this bike is it looks like a bunch of chimps did the wiring work. There seems to be more feet of butt-connectors than wire itself. The clutch cable and odometer cable were electrical taped together and routed in a mannor where they would get pinched on a sharp right hand turn. I am sure there is a lot more that I have not yet noticed.
Today, I decided let me look at the valve clearance. So I get out my feeler gauge set. removed the seat, shrouds, moved up the gas tank enough to get in there and actually found the right size allen wrench to fit the bolts. Then I said, hmm, maybe I should wait untill I get one of those Porche tools. I was looking at it and the thought had crossed my mind that is it possible to turn the adjusting screw in to just touch for zero lash, then back off the screw a certain amount of turns to acheive the proper lash? I would imagine that there is some inaccuracy dependant on thread engaugment and probably other factor as well.

thanks,

By what you said about the wiring & pinched clutch/speedo cables it sounds like your bike is in pretty original condition! The wiring on these things really is crap. I also had to reroute both speedo & clutch cables to stop them getting pinched in the steering head stop.

The way you suggest to adjust valves is fairly well documented as the "1/8 turn method". Check downloads area for info on this. I reckon it's probably more accurate than trying to do the valves through the "eye of the needle" with a feeler gauge.

I'd recommend getting your starter sorted rather than pulling it off. It's worth keeping even if you only use it as an assist with the kicker.

I don't know if you are informed, but the estarter is only a restart. In cold you must start de engine with the kick and when the engine hot, then you apply the estart. It's on the books. Beside that the only good start systems on these bikes are only until 1999. After that... crap

Husby - Did the start systems get changed on the 2000 model or was it part of the engine redesign for 2001?

I suspect that naming it a "restarter" and subsequently printing that in the book only occurred after they found it did not work well enough to call it a "starter". :(

Hey Guys,
I think i will keep the electric starter. I was trying to kick start the bike with no riding boots on, just sneakers, and that kicker came up and hit me on the back of the leg---left a nice bruise.
