i realise that economy isn't an important word but my dealer gets through half a tank doing just one 20 minute MX race. i think that's absurd but i want to know who has the 'ugliest' MPG figures?

carl whotya get?

i used to just clear a 2 hour enduro, indeed two years ago some may recall that i was in second and thought it would be alright not to worry about that last diddy-bit to the throat and ran out with half a lap to go.

however since the move to keihin i have gradually improved until at my last enduro in november i did a straifght 3-hour and all i needed to fill it up after 1.5 hours was 5 litres. i don't think it took it all.

i guestimate that i'm good for 2.5-2.75 hours now. i think that the '01' cam was part of the problem, i had to rev the nuts off it just to keep it going. no way would it lug.

i guess if i was to green lane i'd only get the same MPG because i'm not set for an even throttle.

well boys WHY?

regards

Taffy

40 to 45 miles to a tank in the sand washes and the high speed 50" trails.

60 to 65 miles to a tank on singletrack, mostly 2nd and 3rd gear twisty stuff with the occassional open stretch

A reasonably quick 35 mile loop in the high desert get my 550 down to fumes. The 470 and 650 will each have a pint or so left by the same mark. All three bikes have stock fuel tanks.

Since I'm a larger rider (6' 5" 250lbs) my bike is working a bit harder than others.

Regards, Mark

In the forrest, approximately 3.5 l/h

MX track => 7.4+ l/h (maximum 1h15min)

I figure that I can do 60-65 miles of relatively fast riding in the desert. Over New Years weekend my friends' Son Matt, a friend of his from work and I took off at about 10:00 in the morning and went on a "Long Ride". When we got back it was about 4:30 in the afternoon. And we had gone 63 miles and I had about 1.5 to 2 litres of fuel left according to the graduations on the tank. We did allot of technical riding for most of the ride, but, had to make a bee line back at the end of the day. Matt was riding his 2001 380MXC with a 4 gallon tank, and had about a quart or less when we got back.

About 100km on <>7litres from my 98 FE501. Mix of single track and fire trails, 1st to 4th gear. Essentially the same with FCR as original Dellorto, although not as much fun.

That averages to about 10 mph, sounds like some of our technical trails.

How far can you go when averaging 35 or 40 mph?

We have one area where we do a 26 mile loop in 45 minutes; 35 mph average, my consumption goes up quite substantially on those trails. I can't do that loop twice on a single tank.

What do you mean 'not as much fun'.

Which carb do you prefer and why?

Not as ugly as your avatar, but close :)

The "A" loop was 27 miles, the "B" loop was 15, and the "test" loop was 2 miles.

Dirt Rider 450 Shootout fuel consumption

The FCR makes the bike much more pleasant to ride, more responsive, but more controllable and gruntier at the same time. It may have been that the Dellorto can be made to work as well, Dale seems to think that it can get close, but with my knowledge and access to parts the FCR seemed like the go. Taff assisted with the jetting specs and apart from increasing the a/c ppump stroke from 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm and an inability to get it to cold start on the choke no matter what I've tried, its a definate improvement over how it was. Economy is much the same as I'd leaned the Dellorto off to get it working properly. 185 main and lowered needle from memory, although my memory is what it was, so I could be wrong, or I could have made a type and meant 165, but no it was 185. I also went down with the pilot but that I've forgotten.
