I read in Dirt Rider Magazine that Steve Ramones 06 works KTM 450 has a dual cam head run with chain and gears. Talk around my local dealer is that Husaberg will get the same top end. Will it happen in 06? I went in to my dealer to buy an 05 FE 550. Some other lucky fellow just bought the last 05. I watched them load it. Now I may just have to have an 06. Will it be dual cam? Will it be better than 05 or will I have probs? I wonder about these things. I believe quality is way better on 04 and up bergs and ktm wouldnt produce something until most bugs are gone. Would like to hear some of your thoughts on this. P.S. I thought about KTM very seriously but I dont think I will be happy on anything but a 550 or 650 Berg they are the fastest out there but dont tell anyone. :wink:

Hey Wooley, doesn't answer your question about the 06 but thought I would let you know of another buying option. I have been working with my berg dealer back in Michigan and he is getting me a 04 fe550 sent from the distributer and this way I get the discount. May be something to talk to your dealer about if your interested in a 04.

That is an excellent idea I will talk to my dealer about that possibility. I just want an 04 or newer so a non current new bike is fine. The discount you speak of must be the 10% to UHE members? Maybe i can get a smokin deal this way. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

wooley,

guessing what the '06's would have is a crystal ball deal, so I can only say that I predict that the '06's won't have a twin cam. If Berg gets it, they'll release it in 07, same time a little 250 is supposed to show up.

I would agree that you should pick up a discounted '04. The new technology is there, you'll get any necessary updates, and you'll pocket a boatload of cash that you can use towards streamers and spoke rattlers like I do, or something else if you prefer :)

thanks,

I went with the skid plate and equip to make it street legal but If I would have known that streamers and spoke rattlers were available I would have went with them. Do they offer a front basket too? :lol:

Hey Lubbs, is your street legal equipment from mostly oem parts or aftermarket. I would love to have a street legal berg.

I told my dealer that I wanted it street legal and he knew exactly what I needed. He deals with it often in michigan because bikes have to be licensed for the road to compete in most MI enduros. Also my dad just bought a Fe450 from him and got the same stuff. Brake light, mirror, horn and light switch is what I had to get and as far as I know they were company items. Very reasonalbly priced IMO. Actual that is one of the bigest selling reasons on the berg for my dad, because it could be licensed with minimal effort and equipment compared to installing baja kits. If you need more info let me know. I have even found websites listing the requirements for all states. I could find it again if you want. Hope this helps.

Lubbz,
I do believe that if Husaberg were to introduce a fe based model that was fully street legal out of the crate, it would be very successful on the sales floor.The timing is right ,the competition is thin,demand is at an all time high.With the ever increasing gov't controls on what can be made street legal in many areas of the U.S. and Canada it is only a matter of time before one of the major marques fills this void.......nsman

Nsman.

I totaly agree. Although I would not personally want one that was tuned down for dual purpose with street friendly tires and the other gov. requirements that would make it legale. I would prefer to have a street bike and a berg. (more toys that way :wink: )
But yes, I absolutely agree that they would sell. If Husaberg made one and they starting hitting the road it would not be long before you could talk to a non dirt biker about Husabergs and not get a blank stare in return.

The problem with the bike being street legal out of the crate here in the states is the emissions bugaboo. I doubt they could get an 06 to pass emisssions without substancial detuning and expence.

Yep, too many hurdles to over come in the states I think, besides ktm is coming out with this now;

Does anyone think they would let Husaberg compete? ktm is doing it because of their dulal p. battle with bmw's HP2;

And I also bet aprillia may be working something up in the future with their v twin. Maybe if the berg did have a 9something.cc. and a dual cam they could put the hurt to em in this category.

Hi Steve,
What are the regulations in Aus. that makes the Bergs street legal.Are the bikes different from the N.A. machines?Do yours come with full road equipment ie: horn, mirrors,blinkers, DOT tires and is the fuel tank plastic, etc.Does each state have its own regulations as here, or is yours set on a national basis.....nsman

Fe and Fs bikes are street legal in Norway as well. THe problem with the Fc being the lack of lights and exhaust.

Hi nsman,

In Australia both FE and FS models are fully street legal, regardless of where you buy them / road register them. Australian design rules are standardized across the country, however re-registering older vehicles in different states varies in difficulty from state to state.

Both models are released with lights, blinkers, horn, road legal tyres, plastic tank, mirrors, etc. In order to meet Australian Standards, the emmissions standards require that the bike be jetted to suit. When purchasing a dirt bike from new in Aus, be it Japanese or Euro the dealer will normally always perform a "derestriction". ie. carby is rejetted and any intake / exhaust restrictors are removed, unlocking the bike's full potential.

Dealers will normally perform this modification by default. In the words of my dealer "we always derestrict our bikes, otherwise they'll run like sheit, foul plugs, etc. If this happens you'll never buy a bike from us again".

Strictly speaking this renders the bike non-roadworthy. On the invoice they will write "for competition use only" just to cover their own arse. But this doesn't stop the buyer from registering the bike.

Hope this answers your question,

Bergermeister

Bergermeister,
Thankyou for your reply.The Govt of Nova Scotia is contemplating changing our current regulations,which are similar to yours,I just needed some info .....thanks....nsman

Hi nsman,

Looks like Burgermeister has beaten me to the ansewer to your question.

Steve

I believe the road legal status here lies in the existence of an Australian road "compliance plate" with the chassis number stamped on it that is issued and rivetted to the vehicle by the importer before it sold from new. The issuing of compliance plates is a federal (country-wide) thing but then each state looks after its own vehicle regos. Hence there is a huge variation in what is required and what rego costs from state to state.

The exercise of getting a particular type of vehicle approved for compliance is quite onerous however, once the plate is fitted there seems to be few checks to guarantee a bike is truly road legal. What it means is that it is damn near impossible to get a motocrosser registered here, road legal or not.

A yearly vehicle inspection is required for rego in only about half of the country. Even so what is looked at seems to depend on the mood of the inspector. I had one inspection certificate issued without the inspector even looking at the bike. The inspector another time must have had a burr up his butt & went over it with a fine tooth comb.

Normally I just refit the mirrors (I only recently started to run with them fitted for motard trim), check the electrix are working & the bike will pass. No one seems to care if tyres are DOT rated, only that they have at least a couple of mm of tread. I have always used standard knobbies on the road. Have never had exhaust emissions or noise levels checked. I did get knocked back once with the 'berg cause the frame number wasn't stamped "clearly" enough! Another time the bloke wanted the chain guard fitted.
