Possibility of a wet ride this weekend, lots of ground water. I heard somewhere that this should be done. What is the procedure for drying out the stator? does the ignition cover have to come off,if so, is there a gasket? Should I use a drying agent? Do I have to be careful of anything?
Also does anyone know where to pick up a good quality torque wrench that reads down to 5Nm for torquing the valve covers and stuff.
THANKS....... to anyone who can help with this. :)

DRYING OUT STATOR

Hi, Bif......
Drying the stator is relatively easy - just take off the ignition cover, wipe or blow out the area around the stator and the inside of the cover. A low temp heat gun or hair dryer on low can be used, just don't hold it in one place too long. The cover on my '98 does not have a gasket, so I put a very thin bead of RTV around the lip on the cover and around the wiring harness where it enters the case and reassemble it to the motor. FWIW, most of our trail rides up here cross one or more streams and lots of large, deep puddles, and I have had zero problems with wet ignition. Some of the members here have drains in their covers to keep moisture from building up on really wet rides.
I have a Snap-on QC1R200 click-type micrometer torque wrench good for 40.0 - 200.0 lb/in. (4.52 - 22.6 Nm), comes with calibration document and instructions, all in a case. Most good tool supply houses (Matco, Cromwell, possibly Sears/Craftsman) also have torque wrenches, as well as some of the motorcycle tool suppliers, eg Motionpro. Park Tools has a beam-type wrench for bicycle maintenance that is ok for light work.

have a look at this for an alternative way of doing things
