whew! had to take a break from things mechanical and spend some time sitting down (my walker is getting worn out).
to sum up some of the probs with the 650, most of it can be leveled at the carb. came with an aftermarket fcr that has its ap linkage external to the carb. never saw one like it (can't say that now). looked at the jets, and like darrin said, the main was changed to a 155, it had the stock starter jet of an 85, but somehow came with a pilot jet of 60. (you sure the guy didn't come from death valley?) when i went to the local shop to get something in the low 40s, he looked at it and said "what the he!! is that?. evidently this model fcr uses a unique pilot. so after doing some research, i found some at bikebandit listed for a harley 8O . while waiting on the jets, checked and reset a few things. the valves were set between 1/4 to 7/16 turn, the timing on the stator was advanced a tad. the comp releases were whacko. the rear brake spring was on wrong (even tho you had a pic that showed you the right way, darrin). made up some cheater brackets so that the can fit snugly. the clutch lever front stop was gone. had a small coolant leak, the cam cover still leaks oil, as well as the clutch cover. got the jets and fired it up with the tank off, had to make some slight changes to the pilot fuel screw and idle (had to refit a us screw to the bowl where the idle knob was mounted because it was stripped) might have to do that with the front allen on the front valve adjuster cover because of somebody's overzealous wrenching.
put the tank on, made some wire clamps for the fuel lines, put on the shrouds and rad vanes, tried to fire it up...nothing. pulled the tank off , redid the throttle cable slack and rechecked the cable routing. reinstalled tank..nothing. said pisson it, i'll wait til my son shows up and have him kick it, maybe i had a stroke and can't apply enough beef. he can't kick it either so i tell him to push me down the street while i grab the comp release and snick it in 2nd. kaboom, fires right up, but its running at 5-6000 rpm. ride the brake and back to the garage. pull the tank and inspect. happens again. finally notice that this oddball carb throttle bellcrank sits so high, it hits the tank. when you blip the thottle, it stays there (now you know why you looped it, darrin, and why it was such a bear to start at times). rotated the carb so it clears and took it for a warmup ride. now there is a (to me) loud clacking noise from the top end, so its back to take a look at the valve clearances and who knows what else.
more on this riveting drama as it unfolds. (but we're close, darrin)
