Hi i was hoping to pick up a 03 Fe400 this weekend but everyone is trying to talk me out of it as these bikes are very unreliable and i would be working on it all the time, i know everyone on this site is probably biased, but i don't have the funds for a newer model. should i avoid this bike and is there anything in particular i should look for?

tell me about the bike you have now and what you have done to it to suit your needs

the '03s can be a good bike, infact an excellent bike! if you are mechanically minded you can do the work yourself.

the sem ignition is good for 2-3 years and then one day it just stops working. £130 to get it rewired better than new and never to happen again!
the emulsion tube and needle in the carb need doing every 3-4 years.

the camchain can be soft and the tensioner blade should be updated at the same time. you should ahve the better cam follower bearings. if it was raced, the valves can tulip.

My current bike is an XR250 but it is time for an upgrade so i can keep up with all the KTM's people over here. i've lowered it and thats about it, i,m not affraid of regular maintenance and capable of doing most jobs myself, i've been reading the thread about the sem unit and wished i hadn't as i'm really confused now. but if getting it rewired sorts the problem great, what about the leccy start is it reliable?

have you had a good look around at what bikes are available to suit you ?

if you enjoy working on your bike and don't mind spending $ to keep it in good shape ... the husaberg is for you .

the later model the better .

or you could look for a bike which fits you , a bike that you don't need to spend much on to get it to suit you .

unfoutanately all enduro bikes are to tall for me, i'm fine on the track it's just when i do green lanes and need to put my feet down a lot, it's just something i have to live with. my biggest problem comes with kicking bikes after i drop them usually on steep rocky inclines. the only bikes that really fit me is stuff like the crf230 which is never going to happen. i believe bergs have a 36.5" seat height which is lower than most, so is a good place for me to start

you mean a sheila that's a mechanic?

strewth!

na!!!

i had an '03 fe 400 as my first berg and the 1 mechanical i had was down to my lack of experience wrking on 4 st engines.

lovely bikes to ride and i have to think hard for one that would suit typical welsh riding more.

they do require good set-up though as if a couple of things such as valves, decomp or idle are just fractionally out then they all add up and you'll want to burn it in the street.
if you get it, first major adddition you want to make after you got everthing sorted is a keihin fcr39 carb. transforms the bike completly for the better.

i'm currently on a '06 fe 450. if they had a new fe 400 i'd be on that. that is how good they are for the uk.

well here goes, should be an owner by the end of the weekend. in for a penny in for a pound ( thats money to you foreigners).
p.s where do you get a keihin carb from?

you wanna keihin carb ???

any bike shop should be able to get you one , better still order it online and save $$$ .
do you know what size & type you need ?

don't get a 2nd hand one .
