Hi there,
doing my valves for the first time, and I'm wondering if the cam has to
come out in order to re shim?
In the repair manual it say's it does, though I read a reply Dale E wrote saying rockers
came out, thiough no mention of cam.
Whats the best way?
Also does anyone know the pitch and length of the crankshaft locking bolt and the rocker arm shaft removal/installation bolt?

Cheers

In answer to your first question-Yes. The cam at least needs to be pulled part way out and laid down so that you can have adequate room to get the shims out and in without too much drama.

My original post about removing the rocker arm shafts was a dealer bulletin, and since that time I have spoken with my local mechanic and he had told me that it was much easier in the long run to just make the lash adjustment using the cam out method as in the end it is much faster and easier. The cam removing method is also what is in the shop manual.

I am curious, and have a couple of questions.

#1 How many hours do you have on your bike?

#2 What are your valve lash measurements right now?

The reason I am asking is b/c the only person so far to say that they have done a valve adjustment on the new motor that I know of is Dustbite. He has a tour business that he uses these bikes for, and by now I imagine has close to 450-500 hours on a 450 and a 570, and has only had to make adjustments so far on the exhaust side b/c the shims had distorted slightly.

Finally, I checked and cannot find spec's on locking bolt other than it is an M8, or 8mm bolt I'm assuming. I also assume that it is the same pitch as the bolt that goes through the side case.

Faster and easier to leave the cam and just remove the rocker arm(s).

Cool,

When did you adjust your valves-how many hours? And how much had they moved? Were they loose or tight?

Thanks

I had to adjust the intake valves at the first service after just a couple of hours. They were a bit tight.

Hey Guys,
checked valve-clearances, 40.6 hours 0.16 exhaust and 0.12 inlet.
I was recomended that I leave it alone until inlet 0.08 or 0.10,then reshim.
Whats your opinion's on this?
