'03 fe400 with stock jetting running way too lean ! Have done all I can to stop the pinging ! With ******** timing a super spotless fuel system . An air filter loaded with filter oil . 110 octane racing fuel . Irridium spark plug . It still wants to ping slightly under load . All I can think of is a re-jet to a little bit richer . Or is there a problem with that tricky ignition system . It WILL ping with map switch on HI setting no matter what . I run the thing on the LOW setting right now till this is worked out . What have I missed ???? Please be kind ! As I have been criticized harshly before on this site . . . . .

keep retarding the ignition till it stops. try and set the idle and fuel screw THE LOT while the bike is hot as it may be a bugger to start the next time.

was that kind enough for you?

to Taffy : thanks for the nice reply. At this time the motor is ******** 4 degrees from factory reference markings . as I have no diagnostic tools to analyze ignition , how far can we go before loss of performance ? seat of pants testing will of course tell me . but the mystery will remain . are factory marks so inaccurate as to be useless ? using the dial indicator gives me TDC . I can use my dialback induction timing lite . All to no avail when I have no specs to follow . perhaps you can assist with a BTDC setting at idle speed . making my own reference marks will do the rest . I suppose after you reply we may move to electrical forum . as i dont want to ruffle feathers :) !!

Have you read "the doc"?

firstly you need a fresh timing mark

secondly it needs to be at 6 degrees BTDC at a regular idle

but the problem we have is that the coil can misunderstand the wasted spark. I put my bike back together at the weekend and had to go for 12d BTDC and not the 6d BTDC. I'm afraid that that is what they are like.

To Taffy : Sorry to be so late with reply . Been away . Since our last exchange I put the jetting bug to bed . After the usual trial and error I've arrived at very good setting . Replacing the stock dr270 needle jet with dr272 . Moving the needle clip to 2nd groove from top . Will ask a couple of questions on SEM dual range ignition in that department . Bee Well !!!!
