Well I just stripped my carb to see what's there. I have :-

Main jet - 185
Needle jet - 270DR
Needle - K51
Needle clip - 2
Pilot jet - 35
Throttle slide - 4mm
Choke jet - 45
mixture screw - 1 turn out

#9980 idle emulsion tube is missing !!

The bike runs pretty good but i do have a few issues like:-

Hard to start when warm. Starts good on choke from cold and seems to start better warm with the choke. Never starts on the E button.

Seems to bog a little in tight woods; stalling from a closed throttle. Runs clean and strong on the needle and main jets.

So I'm going to get the emulsion tube fitted and I'm wondering if I should order a few other jets as well to experiment with.

I'm not going to change anything but the emulsion tube to start. Having read lots I'm hoping for miracles ! I have to check valve clearances too.

So I'm curious if anyone can recommend a Dellorto jet set up for me. I read the stuff in the Doc but I'm not sure it applies to my bike and location. My riding tends to be at around 0 - 250 metres and we have a climate much like the UK. Taffy; are the first settings in the doc yours from the UK?

Anyway; it's been fun getting intimate with my berg. I bought it 3 months ago and it's been a journey of discovery. It's by far the best off road bike I have owned so the riding has been fabulous and getting the hang of starting has been a challenge. The previous owner summed it up for me; "only a true enthusiast can appreciate something as frustrating but ultimately rewarding as a berg". So no regrets from me

A few years of BMW ownership had removed me from the shed and tinkering with bikes. Since the berg came along I spend as much shed time as saddle time (is this a good thing?) and it's familiar. Most of my bikes have been British or Italian so I'm no stranger to shed time and it's good to reconnect with that.

It gets easier though right?????

I have a 97 fe-400. I would increase the pilot jet to a 40 that should take care of the hard starting when warm and stalling, I've tried a 35 and it just bogs and want to stall. My other settings are a #35 needle with 258 needle jet and a 172 main. It runs okay starting is 1 kick when warm and a couple kicks when cold. I really think a FCR would be the ticket Dellorto are to sensitive in my opion.

Change the needle and tube as these wear and cause you no end of greif.
Also look at the pilot jet, there should be another jet the fits above it called a CD1 jet, this is not fitted to all models and
does wonders as it helps smooth things out and does make starting a bit easier.
We used to run a 195 main in the dellorto needle roughly in the middle and a 35 pilot i think.
Mixture screw should be more like 2 turns out, make sure that everything is completely clean though, our carb would always clogg up with crap if not used regulary.
By far the best mod was swapping the carb to a FCR though,it really is night and day compaired to the dellorto.

I've gotten my Dellorto parts from http://www.herdan.com/ (including emulsion tube). My bike was missing the emulsion tube and was a pain to start warm. Adding the tube made a big difference.

The 38 I installed on my 501 had similar jetting to yours except I ran the needle in the 3rd groove and a 45 pilot. Yes, it was a bit fat, but totally eliminated the stalling from closed throttle. Of course mine was a 501. Can tell you that the larger pilot helped with the stalling more than raising the needle. Also helped the cold starting. The previous advice given to you that suggested a 40 pilot would be a good place to start.

Thanks for the input. It's pretty clear which way to go here - Kehin FCR!!!

I know what's going to happen; by the time I get the Dellorto running good I'll have found an FCR to fit.

Anyway, I've ordered the emusion tube and a 40 pilot jet plus a longer choke cable and a new choke plunger. (mine is badly worn). So I'll try a slightly larger pilot if it's still not too good after the emulsion tube.

Well the emulsion tube is fitted now along with a 40 pilot jet and I can report improved starting. The bike will start readily with a kick or two and the bog has gone so I'm happy. I'll try some twiddling with the mixture screw to se if I can sharpen up the throttle response.

Current jetting:-

Main jet - 185
Needle jet - 270DR
Needle - K51
Needle clip - 2
Pilot jet - 40
Throttle slide - 4mm
Choke jet - 45
mixture screw - 1 turn out
Emulsion tube fitted

I was going to change the choke cable to a longer one for easier access but the plastic knob on the end of the old cable seems to be molded on there. Anyone know how I can get this off and fitted to a new cable (the new cable has the same nipples as the old one)?
