Unbelievable,

This is what I mean by incompetent dealers here in OZ. Was told the jetting was coerect, it's not, as previously mentioned in NEW FE550 thread. However to my amazement after running it for 1.5hours, i wanted to do an oil change, (really to see what the difference was between my 98 FC600 and 05 FE550-new magnetic plugs etc....) i drained the sump into my oil pan.

OMG!!! Only 600ml of oil collected after complete draining. Now this sort of thing pisses me!

Having a capacity of only 1lt, which is little compared to some other makes, it is important in my mind to make sure that the full 1lt is put in.

Does this make one hesitate taking the bike back there for servicing......

Hi Eames.

Did you kick it over a couple of times ?? (push stop button and hold the manual compression in)
That way you can get out most of the oil in the head and crankase cativity.
VERY important.
And of course while the engine is hot (But of course, even I knew that one )

If the reading is still too low, have a beer and read again.
Should be exactly right now, eh??!

Eames,

For what its worth, I put 1000ml of oil in my bike every time I change my oil. I clean the filter(reusable scotts stainless type) at every change. I only get about 850ml out and I change my oil after every ride. Some rides for me are two or three days in the sand dunes which are "hard" hours and don't like changing while there unless the I put many hours on the bike in one day. What i'm trying to say is, I don't think its too uncommon to loose oil over several hours of riding considering that I must wipe about 100-150ml off the outside of the crankcase housing and head area due to various small "leaks" and "weeps". These can be fixed by adding some sealants and decking the valve covers and other sealing surfaces, I know, but have not taken the bike apart to complete these small imperfections yet. My advise to you is, keep clean (change often) oil in your bike and seal up all the leaks and over time your oil loss should be minimized.

Regards,

Heimir,

Yes, the oil was at full operating temp, and yes the kick starter was pushed through the stroke a couple of time.

Sandskipper,

Do you half fill the oil filter housing with oil on assembly after draining, this will acount for 50ml-60ml + 1ltr. The 50 odd ml will be absorbed into the filter paper. I have no leaks at all for oil to escape, and have also done a breather mod as i learned on my 98 model. NO OIL ESCAPES!

Cheers

Eames,

No, I do not fill the oil filter cavity upon reinstalling the filter. My bike leaks a small bit of oil from the valve covers, oil filter cover, and the kick start decomp mechanism by the swing arm. I also get some weeping at the water pump weep hole. All in all I think about ~75ml after riding. I also use lint-free nylon rags to clean out the bottom of the crank case and pull out as much metallic particles as possible. This may account for another ~50ml as I will soak at least 2 rags. I will set my bike at a 45deg angle for an hour or so while dumping oil as to get as much out a possible. I am very maticulus about my oil changes which dosn't make sense since I have never fixed my oil leaks yet :-k I do plan on doing the o-ring at the kickstart decomp lever, decking the valve covers, and using a larger o-ring on the filter cover outer ring to prevent leaks as I spend over an hour with tooth brush and rags cleaning the engine after every ride. But then again, I don't mind it much as I like to spend quality time in the garage with the Berg as much as possible. I would write off probably ~50-75ml more in normal engine consumption as I have read that the Bergs tend to drink a little more oil than most bikes. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Regards,
