Help! Have a problem with the e-start on an 04 fe550. Was riding today and no problems until I shut her down after about 2 hrs riding. No more e-start and kick won't ignite her. Have checked battery, fuses, wiring and starter but still no go. Got me baffled! Could it be an internal issue? Did notice a squealing sound (like a clutch noise) about10 mins before stopping. Could this be an issue? Any takers?

No harm in taking the stator cover off & having a look. Do you get a spark when you kick it over ? When you say no e-start, is that absolutely no e-start or very slow winding e-start ?

Thanks for the reply! I was up most of the night trying to figure it out. It has no spark at all, even when earthing the battery with the e-start on, or kicking it, which makes me think it could be the CDI unit or a regulator. Anyway, I was so fizzed that I dumped it at a dealer at 8.30 this morning and told them to fix it regardless of the cost. I have to race tomorrow! I will post a diagnosis when it comes. No doubt it will be something simple!

your relay has failed myn did this a few years back made a ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh noise then after doing some big jumps went to start and was dead would not kick start either

cheers doug

Well I got the bike back 4 hours after I dropped it off! And guess what? You were pretty much right doug :D The culpret was a loose contact in the relay under the tank. Looked fine to me when I stripped the bike but apparently the ground wire was badly connected due to vibration and neglect. So the moral of the story is don't neglect your electrical connections and use a good quality electrical grease after cleaning contact points. She starts first time every time now! After a left knee reconstruction and a broken heel from kick starting the beastie, you tend to rely on the magic button more than normal. Hope this experience helps anyone else who suffers this dilemma. Also keep your eye out for a report on the Tumbulgum Natural Terrain in ADB. It was an awesome meet!
