Crank Case Venting

I have been gathering information on my next bike purchase and one of my gripes with my KTM and others are the excessive oil venting into the airbox from the frame tube crank case breather vent.

I was informed that Husaberg resolved this issue in 03, but was not informed of how?

Could somebody tell me where the vent is directed?

Husaberg uses the frame as an air box. The crankcase is vented into the frame (air box) as well. Yes there is still an oil mist/blow-by but it is inhaled by the carburetor. There is a good picture in Pwercell's gallery, picture #14.

......but that all turns to ***** when you upside-down the bike & spill lots of oil into the air intake. :!: As a result many 'bergs now have the breather venting to atmosphere instead.

I thought "keeping it upright", was a key part of the plan! :lol:

All kidding aside, if you vent to the atmospere, You'll want a free-breathing filter attached.
BTW, Husaberg did add another vent on the valve cover, that may be the change that you've heard about. This should help those weeping gaskets.

I would have otheriwise agreed with you, but the factory berg of Tarkkala and Carlson use approx 3 ft of 19mm hose routed up off the valve cover, and down past the rad to the motormount area, no filter appartus, just vented straight to atmosphere. Is the length of hose suffucient to "screen" dirt and making it unlikely to enter the engine?

I guess when you have a factory ride you don't have to worry about a little dirt in the engine :wink:

That's about the size of it.

You would think a hose with a volume that exceeds the displacement of the engine, would not allow an exchange of dirty air. That's one reason for the long hoses. Still, I can't see how there wouldn't be some exchange of crankcase air. :dead:

For my engine, I don't want any chance of crud entering.... If you use a filter, you want a free breathing one of course. Also keep in mind, the longer the hose, the greater the restriction.

With the two vent valve cover, I'd be tempted to give atmospheric venting a go.

19mm hose with no restriction? if you have anything smaller WITH a restriction you're causing a lot of crankcase pressure!

it's worth BHP to have the engine breath freely not to mention waiting for the day when the bike hemoerages and the gaskets explode!

had it happen to my duke on the island once. ugly site!

i'm using the WR400 breather pipe untouched which neatly blows down on the front sprocket. trouble is that it's only about 10-13mm i/d. but then i say to myself-"well it's good enough for yamaha!" and suddenly i don't feel so bad!!!!

I'm Truly Blown Away!!! The air box is integrated into the frame!!!! I've looked at the picture's a million times and have always noticed the open space where the air box goes.... and wondered... W.T.F.???

My airbox has 4 Freaking bolts... not one wing nut... One of my biggest gripes... Is it a regular foam air filter with normal cleaning procedures??

Sounds like crank case venting is still an issue.. but like many have said, there is alot of pressure being directed throughout the system!!

I'm almost positive that I'm going with an 05 650fse Supermotard and get a set of dirt rim's and tires at time of purchase instead of the 05 5-2-5 it's going to break my dealers heart... But I've told him he should start selling them too... I think I'll keep the LC4 around for a little while until I can afford a V-Rod or some other suitable cruiser for doubling the better half...

Yep Rideguy, Husaberg has some unique features (thank god, or should I say Odin ?) but does,nt copy others.

One of thouse features is the air filter placement.

Another feature is the counterbalancer which is on the chrankshaft itself and spins in the opposite direction. It lessens the much-dredded gyroscope effect.

There are more features that these bikes have, but my steak and red wine is waiting.........

on my 03 fc550 which was a ex dealer race bike, theirs a piece of coarse sponge in the vent pipe wich i was told to clean after every ride. not had any problems with it.

Verry informative Thankyou!!! I see there are 3 Dealers in my province, which I think is quite good. Only problem is that they are 4 -7 hrs away. I will have to take a road trip soon!!
