Unfortunately I have seen such quite often.
The crack propagates from the broached keyway.

Manufacturing tolerances being what they may some primary drive nuts bottom on the crankshaft shoulder as opposed to locking the gear.

Dale, do you work on bikes professionally, or how comes you have seen this quite often?? This happened actually at WOT with a 15/42 gearing on this year’s Tuareg Rally in Marocco me being in the lead when it happened on day 3 (out of 8)! Luckily it was on an open straight, otherwise I would not have a chance to post this. I know another guy to whom it happened, he was less “luckyâ€Â

Multi-day Desert Rally, WOT, in the lead=mild riding? I'd hate to see the extreme. 8O

Yes. I am a technical mercenary (ie soldier of fortune / whore) and have worked for the likes of Factory Suzuki, Highland, Husaberg, etc.

Drop by my gallery sometime or visit my now 5 plus years and counting dated web site. Man I need to update this thing. www.D-Lineaweaver.com

If you are so inclined you may also do a web search for Dale Lineaweaver, Lineaweaver Racing, Lineaweaver Husaberg, Lineaweaver Noyes, etc.

.... most of the time the bike was ridden very carefully / slow / low revs / little power / ... due to lacking riding opportunities here in GER (and lacking rider skill as well...).
On that Rally, till the bike broke, most of the distance was covered in "Liasons" / mild pace / not timed. Only say 200km timed "Speciale", out of those 100km on the day when it happened. The hard stuff still was to come. So not too much abuse nor contradicting extremes, I'd say. I was using 15/42 sprockets, so it was not even overreving.

Yup this is what happened to mine also. Now trying to figure out if it's worth repairing.
